More like denying that dinosaurs existed

What does that mean? They went down like a nuclear bomb? As far as I can tell very few people prefer their early albums to their late ones. Let It Be is as good or better than anything they did.
Back to the original topic. I just cannot get Destroyer and Grizzly Bears. I gave already a dozen spin each and find them utterly uninteresting and boring. For the rest I generally agree with most of the opinion expressed in this forum

yeah I admit it was a bit random. What I meant was, after the Beatles the landscape changed completely. Their standing in history is so radically different than almost everything else that the usual standards of hype simply fail to capture anything abuot them. Like sensory overload. They broke the scale.
Aphex Twin/Richard D. James Arctic Monkeys Clap Your Hands Say Yeah The Fiery Furnaces Franz Ferdinand Hope of the States Nirvana (THE most overrated band of all time) Pavement Sleater-Kinney Sonic Youth Squarepusher Tom Waits The White Stripes (I will never get it)

I think SFA are probably the furthest from being overrated. Nowhere that I know have they ever been called The Second Coming or Best Band in the World Ever (like The White Stripes and Nirvana have been called). In fact, I think SFA are generally underrated.
Although...their last album (Love Kraft) was crap. And I'm a HUGE fan of SFA.

Coldplay is not really that highly rated. Nor is U2's more recent work. But I strongly dislike both, so rating them at all, I suppose, is overrating them.
I know they have some critics' ears but I wouldn't call them overrated. I admit they are dampening their more experimental noise with each record but more power to them for just putting out some great stuff regardless of genre-adherence or so called "avant-garde" leanings.

Its just a matter of taste but Destroyer got my attention the first time I heard them.
Now back to business!

Is Jeff Buckley mentioned already? One good album adds up to a rather slim back catalog. Grace is really good album, but it alone surely doesn't justify his cult status. Not all artists that die young and pretty will be end up being overrated. Otis Redding is not overrated, Blind Melon never got the credit they deserved.
There are so many generic bands out there that seem to be more consumed with their image and rock credibility than their music: The Strokes, Interpol, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, DFA 1979, … anyone?
I think all these are overrated compared to Super Furry Animals mentioned in the first post. Unlike any of above SFA has already stood the test of time, and buying their record doesn't make anyone hip. Gruff Rhys is also capable of writing very strong melodies which I personally think is the rarest gift of them all.
I understand that NME has to meet its sales targets, but I also will never understand how come people really bought into such mediocrities as The Libertines or Arctic Monkeys. Is it a class society thing?
The most overrated? I guess Nirvana is a good call.

I'd say Sketches for My Sweetheart The Drunk, at least the Tom Verlaine-produced first disc, is as good as Grace. I think if Buckley had lived to see the project through, he would've easily topped his debut.

I have to say this is where we disagree.
I as well own the album. IMO few very good tracks (The Sky is A Landfill, Nightmares By The Sea) stand out from material that is otherwise weaker than anything on Grace. Of course an unfinished work shouldn't compare with finished in the first place. I of course agree on the first disk being stronger than the second, and the production on the first is not bad at all for posthumous release.
... and now back to hating good music. How about The Stone Roses - for most overrated?
This topic should be renamed "Popular artists that you don't like".
To suggest that a band such as U2, the Hold Steady, Band of Horses, etc. is overrated because you don't enjoy their music is, quite frankly, offensive to those that do like those bands. Am I less of a music fan because I love U2 and The Hold Steady? Are my tastes suspect? They may be different than yours, but not necessarily less.
Judging by the year-end lists, many people strongly disagree regarding The Hold Steady. Millions of fans worldwide disagree about U2 (I'm guessing that those that think that U2 is overrated did not grow up in the 80s. I did, and U2 was revolutionary and it is remarkable that they are still relevant today).
I am not a fan of TV on the Radio. I just don't like the genre. But, I am not pretentious enough to assume that, because I don't like them, they are overrated.
So, please feel free to disagree with my musical tastes. Music is subjective. But, please don't demean my tastes because you don't agree with them.
Maybe I'm just cranky today. Normally I'm a bit more diplomatic.

Good point, Troy. I'm personally not offended if someone says I band I like is "overrated", but I try not to use over or underrated when I'm assesing a band. I've probably done it at some point in my career, though.

I'm guessing that's probably true too. If the only U2 albums I'd been exposed to were the last couple, I'd probably call them overrated too. But in their hayday, they were easily as important to music as today's more successful critical darlings (Wilco, Radiohead). Like both those bands, their ability to one-up themselves with each release and explore new musical territory at the risk of alienating their fans was pretty amazing.
