The Joggers are a great band. Ben Whitesides' delivery evokes the timeless emotional ambivalence of the hipster with soul(do I care or don't I?), and the music is characterized by profoundly catchy off-kilter guitar riffs: a sometimes rambling, bleating, scissoring profusion of slithery and strange but extremely palatable instrumental maneuvering. There are usually two lead guitars at play, winding around and nipping at one another like a couple of sarcastic snakes.
Think if everybody in U.S. Maple decided to do a few records of more-or-less straightforward love/hate/whatever pop songs, and got a new singer.

It's kind of hard to have discussion of a band when you're the only one on the board who knows about them.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.

I know about 'em. They're good, though i think i need to refresh my memory. And i forget which band the songwriter was in before, but i wanna say he was in a punk band that i sort've feel ambivalent about... not too sure.

after only listening to the songs on their myspace page, i would say that some of their guitar work is kind of interesting. i generally do really like more angular guitar work. however, i could take or leave the rest of it. nothing too interesting about it after some of the guitar work. just sounds like straight-forward pop.
I saw them open for Malkmus. Their set was pretty unmemorable. They had a few interesting ideas, but they seemed to be at a stage where they haven't figured out their niche. They still sound like they're covering their favorite bands. If they can create their own sound, they could be interesting.
"covering their favorite bands"? That's one of the very last accusations I'd level at the Joggers. His voice has rather an indie everyguy sound, but musically they are very, very distinctive.
I've never visited their Myspace or seen them live, but I can just tell from the name that I wouldn't enjoy them. I mean, only losers go jogging. Am I right? Am I right? Haha.
There were a lot of different "The Joggers" when I looked them up on Myspace, so I'm not sure which one is the right one.

I found a copy of Solid Guild by these guys and purchased it after remembering reading about them here. Terrific stuff. They deserve more listeners. Recommended for anyone who wishes the Walkmen weren't so damn boring.
I spent a few years working at Borders Books and Music and picked up a free advance copy of "With a Cape and a Cane" just out of curiosity. It's a pretty cool album: the guitar work is pretty interesting; I think there are hardly any chords strummed on the whole thing. It's mostly built on dual lead lines that interlock and play off each other. Pretty neat. "Era Prison" and "Since You're Already Up" are great. Heck, I like all the tunes on that album.
It didn't change my life or anything, but I kept it, which is more than I can say for a lot of advance copies I got from Borders.
All discussion participants are obviously welcome.
But in reading back through the handful of replies here, I see exactly the same pattern that pops up in nearly every thread I made. What is it with the attempts to cut me down to size? Some are clumsy and obvious (probably talking about you) some have at least a degree of subtlety and subterfuge (the ones who pretend to be amiable or apathetic instead of hostile and contrary (they're pretty transparent too though aren't they)). They're all tiring. To be fair, this thread doesn't include the worst examples, not by far. I just figured I'd speak on it in an out-of-the-way sort of discussion.
I mean, can you think of anything less dignified than being another bobblehead in a goofy conga line of posters who are all attempting to prove once-and-for-all that they're not impressed with a forum newcomer named Blackgravel? I can too. But it takes a minute...I've got it - the poster who replies with what they think is a cutting, streamlined witticism that instead has the effect of instantly making them appear threatened and alone. Stop it. I don't mean to be too much of an ass, but you will not win. You won't even place. Seriously.
ElliotSnitch, that was an impressive post and I do believe you deserve redemption. For that I will give 'With A Cape and A Cane' another listen... and by that, I mean a first listen (other than live, of course).
