I think the fact that I keep listening to the title track even though it hurts my ears says something Smiler For me the bass is what sets this album over the top. Nothing complicated, but catchy as hell all over the place. I loved this album on first listen and I still do.

God, I can't make up my mind anymore... I like then I love it, I hate it then I adore it again. Right Now, I'm really enjoying it again. I like "Some Loud Thunder", it is really distorted but I think it's a brilliant track.

i couldn't agree more. i am going through the same phases on this release. i have givin this cd more airplay both at the house and on my ipod than i have any probably any release in 2006. not because its better, just because of the fact i cant for the life of me make my mind figure out if its a great cd or not. ha.

i love the distorted song probably more than i used to as well. i even change my settings on my ipod so that i can listen to it on there without my ears bleeding. haha.

and as far as being on everyones top lists at the end of the year i highly doubt. i doubt anyones as patient as me and will give this release the listens it deserves.

but also im not even saying it will be in my top lists either. it might be in the middle somewhere, but who knows maybe a few more listens and that might change.

It's a strange album, because when it's on, it's terrific, but it also has some horrible misfires. Somewhere in that mess, there's a great album. However, as it is, it's hard for me to call it anything more than pretty good.

I couldn't agree more, ericg. Some parts of this album are really great, but other parts are just atrocious. It's a very, very confusing album that way. But I still like. There's more good than bad, overall.

Some real classics on this album. I think the peakes are better then on the first album. All around CYHSY was a little better.

The debut absolutely destroys this album. The vocals blend with the music, rather than stand out. It is slower, whereas the former was much catchier, not necessarily more upbeat, but it definitely had a much more hook oriented feel to it. This whole album just drags. Listen to Arm and Hammer and tell me what purpose it serves. It's too short and slow to present an idea, yet too long to be filler. And speaking of filler, I loved the chimes of Sunshine and Clouds and the muted guitar work on Blue Turning Grey. All of these songs presented an idea and ran with it. Upon Encountering the Crippled Elephant feels and sounds like a bad trip, and it's just a mess to listen to. The only high parts are Satan Said Dance, Underwater, and Yankee Go Home.

Maybe I've just been setting myself up for a fall after their first album, but I honestly hate this album right now. 3/10

I haven't seen a link to the stream of this album, so here it is. Some Loud Thunder

Why they hell did they think it was a good idea to put that stupid "Said Dance!" part in?
After streaming this a few times, I probably won't be buying this. I really like a few of the songs like "Underwater You and Me" which I may keep in my itunes, but as an overall album, this fails.

I have to admit, some of this is really growing on me. Emily Jean Stock and the Castles Burning song have the coolest 60's style girl group background vocals. Overall, still a disappointment from their debut, but not as bad as first thought.

Just a little side note. My 2&1/2 year old son is obsessed with "Satan Said Dance." He's been into music since he could walk and dances constantly, and this is his new favorite track. He knows how to load CDs into the DVD player in our big screen, and it's fun to see what catches his ear. I'd say Ray Charles is his favorite, though he's had a few indie faves (Magic Numbers "Love Me Like You", Flaming Lips "Free Radicals", which nearly drove my wife insane, Beck's "Girl" and several songs by the Eels). Anyway, it's hilarious watching him get down to CYHSY. Once he latches onto a song he carries the CD with him everywhere he goes, so I kept it from the wife as long as I could this time. Inevitably, I walked in yesterday only to hear "What is our son listening to??"

Bump. Is anybody else finding this album to be severly underrated? If you haven't listened to it several months...I highly encourage you to do so again.

This album has some of the oddest melodies I think I've ever heard, but they're all so beautifully strange and they just get stuck in your head and rattle around for a while. Of course the bass playing is amazing too.

For some reason, this album reminds me a lot of one of my all-time favorite albums, Dungen's "Ta Det Lungt" in terms of vocal melodies.

Anyways I know it's hard to get into an album you've discarded to the back of your computer's harddrive many month ago, but I think this one is worth it.

Certainly more dynamic and interesting than their self-titled. I'm not sure which album is better, though.

Well for me the debut is one of my favourite albums ever, this was a bit of a disappointment.

I'm trying really hard to find an undistorted some loud thunder on the net, but so far I've come up with nothing. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Looking past trends and a cold reception from critics, there is fine, of-the-beaten path album in Some Loud Thunder. At the very least, I know I'll still be able to listen to it long after I get worn out on stuff that will probably be higher on my year-end list.

This is one album I haven't really lost interest in throughout the year. It's not perfect, but there's some excellent stuff on the album. It will most likely be in the bottom half of my top 20.

It suffers, maybe, in comparison to their past work, but I feel the same way about In Rainbows and that album will still be sitting pretty at the end of '07. This year, more than ever, I've learned to recalibrate my knee-jerk reaction to suit the year at hand.

The knee-jerk reaction can work both ways. I find that the number of albums I thought were mediocre at first, only to find myself loving them at the end of the year is at least equal to the number of albums I thought were fantastic, only to grow tired of by December.

Right, and it can often be for the strangest reasons. A vague thing is taste. The idea of a #1 album of the year is rapidly starting to look like a pipe dream, but I'm sure everyone will manage.

The answer to your "#1 of the year" riddle is right in front of your very eyes.. it awaits you in the depths of EG75's sig; when you come to this realization, only then will you know the truth.

I assume you mean either a) I should let my heart guide me, or b) it's Hissing Fauna.
