"I don't think anyone would claim they're groundbreaking"...
Eh, I kind of would. I was listening to YFIIP yesterday, and when the vocals come on "Stars and Sons" after two mostly-instrumental tracks, it's pure magic.
Nothing, no one sounds like Broken Social Scene. Despite - or maybe due to - having around 20 band members they have their own distinct sound. And make music like no one else.

How about "Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl" and "Lover's Spit"? They aren't groundbreaking but they are definitely different. I love "Lover's Spit"'s lyrics.
I don't mean to be contentious, but I don't agree that they "just make beautiful music". Actually, I don't even think you meant to have an emphasis on the "just" (sorry). Anyway, it's awesome how BSS makes beautiful songs out of chaotic structures...So far the best example of this is "Ibi Dreams of Pavement" off their self-titled album. Their self-titled strays a little too far into chaos sometimes (apparently they were obsessed with topping YFIIP), but I think they could push the envelope a little more than their gorgeous debut. This is why I think BSS have the ability to make an amazing, mind-blowing third album. Too bad they're on a hiatus of sorts.

Self-Titled was their third. Their debut was "Feel Good Lost," which is mostly ambient stuff.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.

You are correct... I could've said "Broken Social Scene make beautiful music" and it would've been more accurate. Sorry for the confusion..
...I've currently got the Kevin Drew album downloading and I'm psyched to hear what he's doing sound-wise. I'm not sure if I should expect a BSS album or what.
EDIT: So, far it's not nearly as airy and sprawling as a BSS album, but it's really good.

One listen through....Mediocre, mediocre, mediocre.

You think so? I've only listened to it once but I think it's good. Not great... but better than mediocre.
I don't know about anybody else, but anything that ends up just being "good" ends up finding its way to the mediocre pile eventually. There's so much great stuff that I can't invest time in stuff that's just good... like, for example, the 2007 Apostle of Hustle album. It's good, but it'll never top my lastfm charts, ever.

That's very true, but many of the albums I think are just good, with repeated listens and attention to detail wind up becoming great. It's taken me a while to learn this, but:

Don't write an album off too soon.
No, I'm with you on that. I've got plenty of albums that have taken some time to register and now rest among my favorites. It's just the sheer quantity of what I listen to has increased in the past year, so I end up writing off a lot of stuff.

Grrr, you're right, I keep forgetting about "Feel Good Lost", because I never listen to it, and didn't even keep it in my library. In that case, I'm hoping for a great FOURTH album from BSS

'you forgot it in people' is an awesome album. i love their atmospheres and dynamics. songs like 'looks just like the sun' and 'shampoo suicide' are complete gems. unfortunately, they went blah by their self-titled album two years later. meh
As far as I'm concerned, "Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl" may very well be the perfect pop song (second only, perhaps, to the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows").
As for You Forgot It In People as a whole; I'm compelled to rate it as one of the best albums of the 2000s - inarguably in the top five, arguably number one. It's simply brilliant, and it's one of about five albums from the 2000s that I return to again and again (the others being the Flaming Lips' Yoshimi and the Decemberists' Castaways & Cutouts, for what it's worth)

Well, you've never lied to me before, so if you're authoritative enough on the history of pop music to say it HAS to be, I guess it does. I'm just glad Arcade Fire came around to perfect the mess left behind by fifty years of poseurs.
