panda bear? i'm a huge fan - but i don't think he uses any analog instruments. i guess if picking the right samples/loops on your laptop is the "technical" prowess mentioned in the question, then panda bear has a ton, but i don't think it does.

While I don't think Panda Bear is a highly technical artist, I will say that he uses melody to an almost technical perfection.

It pays to kill anyone who has information.

My Morning Jacket and Built to Spill are both pretty damn great at "shredding", and Built to Spill in particular has some pretty complex song structures.

Stephen Malkmus is an excellent guitarist, and went on more than a few shredding jaunts when I saw him play with the Jicks a couple weeks ago.

I don't know that they're hyped for it, but Sunset Rubdown is made up of awfully good musicians, as shown by Random Spirit Lover.

i'm still confused as to why math rock can't be included on this list. is that you already know math rock musicians generally have a good degree of technical skill and artistic integrity, so you're wondering WHO ELSE would share these characteristics? or is that you just don't like math rock?

i'm just kind of confused.

Built To Spill and Sunset Rubdown are both good ones, add Mercury Rev to the list as well(especially their earlier stuff)

Track down the EP from the band Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies, it's called:

"Hurrah! Another Year. Surely This One Will Be Better Than the Last: The Inexorable March of Progress Will Lead Us All To Happiness"

Wins the contest for most unnecessarily long title and has 5 great indie rock songs that show some amazing technical work.

Also, Dean Ween is actually not that great of a guitar player. He writes great songs and has great melody, but when it comes to "shredding", he doesn't have the best chops. I think most guitar players would agree. But hey, the guy can rock.

On the other hand, I think the majority of indie rock guitarists are ABLE to shred. I think everyone that has learned the instrument has learned a solo by Metallica or Van Halen. They just don't play that music in the band, obviously.

Anyone can sound like a shred guitarist with a little reverb, delay and a distortion pedal to cover up the mistakes. lol
