I think it was a b-side of the "Letter from an Occupant" single... so good luck finding that.

I finally picked up this album (I blame eMusic, but that's another story). It's a pleasant enough listen, but I wasn't blown away.

That's the problem with putting out great albums. They lead to expectations that often cannot be met. Both Twin Cinema and Electric Version blasted out of the speakers, grabbed you by the ears, and pulled you in. Challengers is a very different album. It's good, it's just not fan-freakin'-tastic like their prior releases.

It's interesting that a number of the favorite artists on this site have put out tweeners like Challengers this year. Wilco, Radiohead, The New Pornos. Each of these albums go with a more stripped back sound than prior releases and have been very polarizing on these boards. I predict all will be in the final top 20, but Wilco and The New Pornos will just eek it out, which is surprising given the amount of support they get on these boards.

Makes sense TFoT, I consider myself to be a huge Wilco and Radiohead fan and a pretty solid, The New Pornographers fan. I was a little disappointed with their new album as well and in comparison to Twin Cinema it is a few notched below. As for the Wilco, well it definitely isn’t as good as their previous albums. I like it enough to own it and I listen to it from time to time but it isn’t captivating.

I do like the Radiohead album quite a bit. It’s solid from front to end and it sounds great to me. That one will have a for sure spot in my top 10, while the other two will probably be in the 20-30 range—maybe.

I'm going to go out on a limb and agree that Radiohead's new album will end the year in the top 20.

I guess I wasn't clear on that one. My prediction is that Radiohead will end up in the top 5.

You heard it here first. Wink

No doubt. I think it's a race with them and the National for best album. I think the National will win out in a real close battle.

I've had plenty of time to live with this album now, and I now think it's certainly their best so far. It was very under-reviewed.

Gonna be seeing these guys (sans Dan "The Saboteur" Bejar) with Okkervil River on Monday (Charles on guitars). Whoo!

On Challengers the slow songs are good and the rockers aren't. A complete shift in that regard, and not a good one (although I actually LIKED Myriad Harbour...even with that vomitous voice.). They'll bounce back.

They definitely put on a good show. When I saw them, Dan was drunk as all hell and stumbled on stage every time one of his songs came up. Hilarious!

Dan Bejar is the best songwriter in the NPs. Neko has a better voice and Carl has a better ear for structure and melody, but overall Dan manages the highest batting average.

I love Dan, but he has had his stinkers. "Execution Day" is off of Mass Romantic, and not only is it the worst NP song, it is in the running for worst song ever.

Same here. I think that's his M.O.

I take it you've never heard "Swan lake"?
