ok. so this year, i have started to notice more new indie bands on mtv. vampire weekend is almost as popular as fall our bum and soulja boy on that channel nowadays, and i saw something on fleet foxes a little while ago i believe. k, so those bands have a poppyish sound, thats cool. last night, i was watching a shot at love with tila tequilla (dont ask), and a commercial for 1 of their video shows came up. i was kind of half heartedly paying attention, as they said how maroon 5, rihanna, lil wayne, and no age would be doing performances. wait, no age? i was very surprised, considering they have a sound that is not easily accesible, and isnt the type of music 12 year old girls like. now, i know that in the last few years, indie has been played a little on mtv, vh1, in starbucks, etc. but those were bands like the shins, modest mouse, and spoon, who had already made a few albums. anyways, my question is, do you feel good or bad about new indie bands being featured on mtv? i have mixed feelings. it is good because maybe soon il will be able to listen to the radio without hearing horrible music, and good music will start to become more mainstream, which i think is good. however, this could be bad, because as they start to get popular, many bands ave "sold out", and changed their sound to suit the 10-15 year old girl audience that watches trl and shows like that. just my take, anyways, discuss.
I feel that eMpTyV is ruining culture as we know it. I'm not going to start some diatribe against Mtv, but let's just say i think it's a heinous cyst on popular culture.
Therefore, anything i like being on Mtv saddens me. That about sums it up, but i'm not going to stop liking No Age because of it.

However, my only ray of light is the completely unwarranted hope that if bands like No Age make it onto Mtv, and indie starts to flood the mainstream, then bands i enjoy will be able to make a comfortable living doing what they love.
However (another one), Mtv has pretty much gone downhill since inception, and i don't even think it was that great in the early 90's. I mean, Billy Ray Cyrus and Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer dominated Mtv until Nirvana destroyed everything

I think that as long as good music is being played on MTV, that nothing but good things can come from it. At first, yeah, some of the bands might sell out and change their style to be more accessible and horrible, but eventually, everyone's going to get used to the first album, and everything will be okay.
Everything's going to be okay. Everything's going to be okay. Everything's going to be okay...

Many of you are too young to remember, but once upon a time, MTV played nothing but music. They actually helped break a lot of great bands.
There was also a show on MTV when I was growing up called 120 Minutes that was 2 hours of underground (or indie if you wish) music. It featured bands like Sonic Youth, Pixies, Social Distortion, the Smiths, etc.

I remember when Mtv played nothing but music, it actually wasn't that long ago. I wasn't old enough for the heyday of 120 Minutes, but i certainly remember seeing some good things on Mtv. Hell, they played Refused's "New Noise" video on Mtv, and that was only 10 years ago.
I think the days of Mtv being a viable form of musical discovery are over, and hearing that No Age has been sandwiched between Lil Wayne (as much as I have a soft spot for him) and Maroon 5 makes me a bit apprehensive. They're not exactly the type of band i would imagine playing on Mtv, but what the hell? Why not?
I remember when Modest Mouse and Yeah Yeah Yeah's and the White Stripes all got relatively mainstream, and they maintained their artistic integrity, thereby keeping their indie-cred and making a good living in music. That's basically all i care about, is a band not completely changing their sound to pander to a new audience. Nirvana springs to mind as a band that kept their integrity when they decided to release In Utero, one of the most vicious and vitriolic and downright ugly albums to sell multi-platinum (though it also had those pretty songs as well)

I doubt anything will change. MTV hasn't been a relevant force in the music industry for at least a decade. Grey's Anatomy breaks more bands than MTV does.

Even when I was a kid (early 90s) MTV was still a huge influence on music. In fact I can say that it was pretty damn influential on my musical development, and not really in a bad way. About '95 or '96 the emphasis on videos began to decrease (along with the quality of music). These days it's like they don't even try any more. MTV2 doesn't even play videos anymore! Then again, I guess it's hard to blame them for not playing videos when anyone can jump on youtube and see whatever video they want. I'm sure there's not a lot of value in a music video channel anymore. They could at least play some good shows like they used to, though. A few of their animated shows were good (man, remember The Head?)
I had a stick of CareFree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor I was back to pondering my mortality.

MTV does still have a weekly indie music video show - Subterranean. Of course, its on MTV2 at 12:00 AM Monday morning...but its pretty good. I record it and watch it regularly.
Regarding that commercial with No Age, I saw the same thing and had to do a double-take - I had to hit rewind to make sure I saw what I thought I saw. (did I mention I love my DVR???)
