That's Paris Hilton. You don't really need to know anything personal about her. Just know that she's a slut. And that she's made a couple of sex tapes which were HILLARIOUS.

She's also so rich that she spends more on her dog than most Americans will ever see.

I thought the same thing... then I started wondering if there are any radio stations that actually play NMH, even in LA.

quote: the Paris Hilton picture is photoshopped. She is really holding a copy of her record. When it first came out. I remember this circulating about that time, and I'm fairly positive I even saw the original along side it.
Even if it's fake, it still sparked some conversation, huh? Plus it's just a funny concept. Can you imagine Paris listening to "Oh Comely"?
I had a stick of CareFree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor I was back to pondering my mortality.

Yeah, that would be pretty great. I like the juxtoposition of truely great things in the hands of idiot people that don't understand them. For some reason that statement made me think of StarWars Episodes 1-3 though...

The sexual content that pervades most NMH songs would suit her well..

I know many loathe Pitchfork, but they've done a few features on In the Aeroplane Over the Sea for its tenth anniversary. Interview from 1997 (This was a low blow for them to put this on the main site, looking like new material. Quite disappointed, but still interesting.) Article on ItAOtS (Featuring guests such as Caribou, Kevin Barnes, etc.) All they are are pats on the back for anyone who loves the album, but I'm a huge fan so it feels good for it to get attention. Now time to re-listen. . .

It's just my favorite album of all-time... I've got nothing else to say.

I voted no but I too think it's way up there. High 9s, but so very, very few albums actually rate a 10 in my book. I did, however, enjoy the comments by the musicians in the Pitchfork article.

For those of you that consider this to be "The Best album of all time," have you heard anything else pre-1997 maybe? This is a completely serious question, by the way.

I say it's one of my favorites, not my actual favorite - and most of the albums I'd put above it are older. But I'm curious, why do you think they haven't heard anything older? I know ITAOTS has a huge amount of hype behind it in terms of the current scene and how many popular bands today were inspired by it, but I'd say its big appeal is in its sheer emotion and vulnerability; for all its window dressing it's a very emotionally open album. I'd think that the album's appeal comes more from that emotional pull than any current hype.

FKA, you know I listen to mostly music from past decades (we just had that conversation last night). I too would actually rank In The Aeroplane Over the Sea in my top five records. Not #1, but almost definitely top five. It's hard to put my finger on it. There's just something about the record that makes it never go away. Are you asking because you don't like it that much, or because you're just curious? If you don't like it that much, I would certainly suggest revisiting it.

I don't know about top 5, but it's a good album. Maybe top 5 of the 90s.

OK, I seem to be hitting a lot of nerves lately. My question was geared towards people that consider it to be their best album of all time. Second, I have given this album tons of chances. I still have a copy of it and I do give it chance after chance but I just don't get it and I don't like. Third, I am just curious if they have heard anything before 1997--you know, the year music was created--yes, that was sarcasm. But I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't heard any older music.

Honest theory is that you have to be a certain kind of freak/outcast to hold it really holy the way a lot of people do and if you don't you just aren't the right kind of person and you never will be. :shrugs: Like The Soft Bulletin funnily enough, Aeroplane actually has a song or two that I'm not necessarily crazy about individually, but the way they work in context of the album make it a 10.0 for me. Kind of bothers me when people rate albums like "ten tracks, 8 nine's and 2 seven's and therefor 8.6". Been thinking of the world a lot in sort of Gestalt principles, things being more than the sum of their parts. Regarding Paris, I too saw the Captain Beefheart photo long ago and was aghast, and now having seen the NMH one as well I'm going to assume they're fake, because honestly. And strangely, my worldview kind of depends on knowing it's not real. You'd think if Jeff and crew wanted us to learn anything it would be to put aside that kind of elitism but I don't want her mingling with them (or Captain Beefheart.) Humanity is a tough nut.
