Woah! Dancin' in here; let's talk about post-rock band Do Make Say Think.
Y'hear about this band Do Make Say Think? They've been the greatest indie band you've never heard of, unless you read Almost Cool, know little about Constellation (or "that label Godspeed You! Black Emperor are on") or have heard of The Cansecos, for a while now, and I'm just getting around to listening to them. Do Make Say Think might not have been able to escape their dramatic labelmates' shadow in years past, but riding the butt of the Broken Social Scenesters, they might get a little farther out there and better known. (Charles Spearin played on You Forgot It In People, and methinks he's had some association with KC Accidental. Boy, Quebec/Montreal and Toronto is turning into a massive orgy of collaborations, isn't it?)
Admittedly, while I have read lots about Do Make Say Think, I only have their self-titled debut, which is frequently derided. I am to understand that it's apparently a Tortoise rip-off, yeah? Whatever. I need more Tortoise and Do Make Say Think.
Yeah, so do you like Do Make Say Think? Heard them? If you like 'em, what albums are their best? Do you hate their eponymous debut? If so, how come?
Hey, you're all right!
(You guys can't prove that Constellation gave me an internship.)
Do Make Say Think are ok. I had their most recent one on my computer for a while. Honestly, it was pretty good, but I pared down my music collection, and it got cut.

I only found one track handy, "I Love You (La La La) from a '99 compilation on Orchard.
I like the sound of it and will be interested to seek out more.
I have come to the realization recently that I'm not as taken with Tortoise as pretty much everybody else I know. On the other hand, I've really like Shrimp Boat and The Sea And Cake who are/were part of the same scene, so you might check them out if you haven't already.
Oh, and it's true, Monheim. We can't prove a thing about that highly lucrative Constellation internship, but I just know that you're in the pocket of those fat cat indie music people and I, for one, am envious as hell...

I've actually come to like Tortoise more and more as time goes on. It's like there was post rock's "golden age" in the late 90s, then there was a backlash, and now the backlash has subsided, and I've come to find that they really are great.
I really like the most recent albums from Mogwai, Bardo Pond, and Tortoise. I'd bet that post rock will chug along just fine, but there won't be as many bands doing it in the future. Same goes for electro and dancepunk.

Why? Do you perceive a change in the audience, or do you think stylistically they've run their course?

I only have Millions Now Living Will Never Die, which isn't a CD that I find myself rushing to a lot. Maybe it's 'cause I'm not the biggest jazz-nut (I intend to be, someday, though), but Tortoise has yet to fully creep into my brain.
I have heard lots about The Sea and Cake. I'm probably gonna check 'em out eventually. The main reason why I brought up Tortoise was because I've heard Do Make Say Think's first album frequently bad-mouthed for being a Tortoise rip-off, and I find that Do Make Say Think plays better than Millions Now Living Will Never Die. I've had more fun listening to "1978" than "Djed." In either case, I plan to get more of both artists. Tortoise might either grow on me or I might never understand them.

:emoticon that shows me cackling wickedly before shutting up and looking around suspiciously:
Yes, you can't prove anything. :looks around some more emoticon:
Let's talk post-rock a definable sub genre with a misleading name. But seriously anyone with an interest in Do make say think should buy immediately because they rock, get "winter hymn, country hynm.." also check out constellation label mates A silver mount zion and tralala orchestra (awesome name), all releases are equally good but I really like the second release "born into trouble as..."
Also anyone who likes post rock should own Explosions in the sky - the earth is not a cold dead place

LET's talk about douchbags who waste space on metacritic music boards slamming others. Mr.overlord of the sea I am curious how someone who is obviously oozing creativity could not come up with a better comment then calling people schills and/or penises both of which are insulting at about a grade 5 level. If you wish to slam someone please take some time and try a little harder. Also if you could show some curtousy and explain the motivations of your smearing that would make a little more sense. Thanks.
to the metacritic moderators, no member of these boards supports street teaming, but if you believe this tread to be that then please kill it
and to everybody else if they don't take a tread down then please contribute to it rather than pointlessly wasting everyones time with random and ill conceived judgements on other members intentions.

First of all, this thread had been dead for over a year until "compile" came on to plug his own band. I left it to see if he'd return, but he probably won't, so I'll remove his post in a few days after the appropriate people see this response.
Secondly, "schill" may be a Yiddish word, but around here, we usually use the synonymous shill, and we toss them quickly. Sorry about "compile", but maybe it did serve some purpose.
Thirdly, I agree with "undecide" that name-calling isn't looked-on highly around here, but I want to make it clear that "NEPTUNE" wasn't calling you a "schill"; at least I think he was referring to "compile". Plus NEPTUNE's sig is "Penis". As far as I know, it's not a putdown.
We do encourage lively debate. We prefer things to be reasonable and to keep personalities and trash-talking out of it though. Things do get difficult sometimes because it's not possible all the time to determine the intentions of the poster. Just consider that if some of us have been around here awhile, we probably don't need to be put in our place. Go ahead and tell us why you disagree with us or what we may have missed, but remember that sometimes the key to a good post is what you don't say rather than what you do say. Shut up, mark.
"compile"'s post will be gone in a few days.

i do most of my posting at like 4am when my patience is possibly a tad diminished from my usually cheery self. ha ha
upon further inspection I had noticed that neptunes tag line was penis and that he was not calling anyone here (me especially) a schill...which much to my surprise apparently infuriates me...ha ha
anyways i stand by the just of my comment in the context that I wrote it in. I don't like pointless antagonizers...i find them immature....however it is clear that Neptune you were not doing that and that it was my misinterpretation...therefore I'd like to issue an apology for lashing out at you
also to mark f...low and behold the mysterious ways of the moderator with all the intrigue of setting traps for damn dirty street teamers! ha ha but seriously keep up the good work
