Its not the wimpyness to me. I like Sufjan and plent of other wimpy artists. Jens Lekman is just so damn schmaltzy if you know what I mean. I can't take it either.

I'd agree. I even like The Boy Least Likely To still.

But I don't consider Illinois to be all that wimpy. It may sound pretty, but there's some fucked up stuff on that album (John Wayne Gacy Jr. anyone?).

Yeah I know what you guys mean and I am a big Sufjan Stevens fan, though I don’t consider his music to be wimpy at all either.

Oh, Kortedala lis a total chick album. I can't deny that. (I described it on one board as "a great album for when you forget you have testicles.") I just figure if I balance him out with some Death from Above 1979 and Grinderman I'll have no hormone issues. Razzer

This is true, and generally I wouldn't like this type of music, but I think he does it pretty damn well.

And I don't mean to be out of line, but I'm sure glad he is talking about girls in his songs. If he wasn't I might have a really tough time listening to it.

I liked his music when I first listened, but I don't know if it has much staying power. It could be how clever the lyrics are, or the novelty (to American ears) of his Swedish accent, but after 10 or so listens that I loved, I don't know if I am going to listen very much more.

Out of interest, how is 'Oh So Silent Jens' different in terms of style to Kortedala? I can't track the damn thing down.

Oh You're So Silent Jens is a compilation of his eps, singles and b-sides, so it's not a proper album. As to the difference in style: It's more Left Banke and less disco-era Bee Gees.

I think anyone who wants to listen to Jens for the first time should listen to When I Said I Wanted To Be Your Dog first, followed by Kortedala, then So Silent, if you're still interested.

I still think Dog is the best one. It has the most charm, which I think it the best descriptor of his music. Oh, how charming is that Jens Lekman should be the title of his next one.

It took me a long time to warm to Kortedala, but I did. I still prefer Oh, You're So Silent Jens, but the latest one does get some time to get past the schmaltziness.

Agree about Black Cab, Maple Leaves, Rocky Dennis' Farewell Song being better tracks than anything on the current record.
