I just bought Heaven or Las Vegas, love it, and am interested in delving into the rest of their albums. Where should I head next?

Question:
Which Cocteau Twins album is your favorite?

Choices:
Garlands
Head over Heels
Treasure
Victorialand
Blue Bell Knoll
Heaven or Las Vegas
Four-Calendar Cafe
Milk and Kisses

It would be far too difficult for me to pick just one Cocteau Twins record out of all of those. I can give you some suggestions in regards to them however. Heaven or Las Vegas is a great record and a perfect introduction for newcomers. You want to steer clear of Four Calendar Cafe unless you decide to get it last when you have everything else already. It is easily one of the worst things they ever did. Same goes for Milk and Kisses but it isn't nearly as bad as Four Calendar Cafe and still worth getting in the long run if you save it for last. Head Over Heels is a great record, probably tied with Treasure and Blue Bell Knoll for my favorite Cocteau's record. Too hard to pick between the three. Garlands and Victorialand are good records but not as good as the three I just mentioned. They definitely sound like the work of the same group but are somehow less engaging. There are some great singles collections you should look into such as Stars and Topsoil and Lullabies to Violane which I believe there are two volumes of, the first being the best and the second is still pretty good. Hope that helps.

I agree with all of this. Treasure is probably the best bet to go with next. It's a bit darker than their later albums, but no less lovely.

I actually just received 'Victorialand' from a friend, and am enjoying it as much (if not more) than 'Heaven or Las Vegas'. Very nice music to zone out to, let your thoughts wander...I have definitely been leaning that way in terms of the music I have been listening to lately.

I don't really have much to add to this thread except that I have been listening to the Cocteaus since the '80's and still love Victorialand and Heaven or Las Vegas. Deep, deep stuff.
The Peel sessions are an intriguing prospect also. Different ambience in the BBC studios..

Oh, could I feel as I have felt, or be what I have been,
Or weep as I could once have wept, o'er many a vanished scene;
As springs in deserts found seem sweet, all brackish though they be,
So, midst the withered waste of life, those tears would flow to me.
