i saw no age open for the liars a couple months back in dc and really dug their energy. the energy def translated well on their last album and on the new album i think they were a little more patient and focused more on the pop conventions for compositions. good change in direction i thought.
on their myspace they have a rendition of bjork's 'oh its so quiet' - tres cool.
as for the debate that got carried away. i agree with w portable joystick and others have stated:
quote:
I definitely consider musique concrete to be music. It's sound that has been arranged and organized by a composer.
But hell, music doesn't even have to have a composer to be music, it just needs a listener. As others have alluded to, music is all about perception.
random how atonement and v for vandetta made it on here. god those movies were really awful. i think the wachowski brothers would create anything if it just included another bullet time sequence.
Yes, please to all involved enough of the noise discussion. Or at least take it to the Avant-Garde thread. (I'm sure the guys that regularly post there will love you BlackGravel) And this isn't really that noisy of an album. Its got the MBV and early Sonic Youth texture to it, but hardly qualifies as a noise/avant-garde album. There are 3 pages in this thread and very little discussion about this album.
With that said, I love how this album sounds. I love the buried vocals. I love how it reminds me of classic indie-rock from 15 or 20 years ago. I love that an old school indie-ROCK album has surfaced to kick the ass all of the indie-rock-lite artists that dominate the current scene. Spoon, New Pornos, Arcade Fire, Sufjan, National, BSS, Iron & Wine, etc. you guys are great, but this really sounds like a breath of fresh air.

Don't incite me to reign down hellfire on that "old music = better" fallacy. It's been applied to music, writing and art in general since the species evolved, it's always been a mix of nostalgia and embarrassing attempts to seem like an O.G., it's always been transparent and most of all it's always been absolute bullshit.
Actually he clearly stated that the newer bands were great as well, he just was happy with the more rigged, less cleaned, rocking up sound that No Age has, which was quite popular in 80's and 90's indie rock.
At least attempt to read what people have to say before you start accusing them of being assholes.
I feel like I'm in The Ward from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and BlackGravel is MacMurphy, stirring shit up to upset everyone else. The fact that I'm actually liking it probably makes me like Cheswick, which is possibly a bad thing.

Since what some of you seem to want is an attitude/ego adjustment, you should stop talking about me as if I'm the topic you take sides on, instead of the actual thread heading.

"Threatened" is never a good look.
man, you really love all this attention. you've been just as responsible for taking this off-topic by being so defensive and argumentative.
You're naughty-naughty finger waving is easily more ugh-worthy than a harmless reference to a classic film. Again, the jibe wasn't even dissing you per se, so again you've stepped in it.
Naughty-naughty finger waving? It's wagging, and what in God's name are you talking about?
Also "a harmless reference to a classic film"? Who talks like that? Besides I was addressing the "lobotomy" comment kid.
Does no one else feel the need to intervene when they witness backward and wrongheaded notions flying around? It moves me to act. If that tendency is getting me attention, and you don't like it, then teach me a lesson by giving me less.
Whatever man. This is not about who's right or wrong here. It's about someone being a pompous ass and when I see someone being a pompous ass, I'm "moved to act". Self-rightous characterizations of us as "threatened" is about the most basely self-aggrandizing helucinating I've seen around here, and it warrants continued monitoring. Baby-sitting, really.
I always picture this kid sitting there grinning and repeating to himself "I've got you cornered. O! My superior wit!" Anyways.

I said earlier: Weirdo Rippers was decent, but it didn't feel grounded enough (it was a compilation anyways..). Nouns sounds like a much more structured, pop-focused album that will hold up a lot better. I actually put both of the albums on a CD and listen to them back-to-back in my car; it's interesting to hear the way their sound has progressed (mostly for the better).
I hate our quoting function. It looks like I'm quoting "I said earlier"
I expect this album to grow on me. It's mixture of boarderline lo-fi high-tech fuzz and thin strident vocals is not the most welcoming facade. It vaguely reminds me of the old DC indie scene. My enthusiasm for it going down the stretch might be inihibited by my hunch that it can only ever appeal to a select minority, whereas a band like Spoon or Arcade Fire can make inroads toward wider appeal.
