Food for thought: Indie Rock, indie pop, indie metal... you can slap the 'indie' label on anything you like, it still doesn't describe the sound, only the commercial status or lack thereof. I've probably rehashed someone's argument here, sorry.

Btw.
I think it's funny how the smallest comment (and if I was a bigot then it should be taken like that even more, as a small comment) starts the biggest bs discussion.
I was clearly joking, I would not say I'm in any way racist. This is a message board... grain of salt.
Apparently I'm late on the Jew jokes, but I make jokes like that all the time, generally about black people, (I know what is coming, but please read some of the politics discussion, where I show my true nature) they always laugh at my parachute pants and then beat me in basketball, then we all go to Popeye's...

OH NO!!! boarder753, you have misunderstood me, I think, if I understand you?? I wasn't having a go at you. Yr joke didn't bother me at all. I was just reflecting on how worked up people get over trivia like music terms, me included. My comment was a self-deprecating dig. I stand behinf yr right to tell un-pc jokes...

It's all good Ishmael, I just picked to quote you because I thought it was funny and kinda summed up my general idea... I hadn't seen anything from you saying you were offended.
Anyways, Mastodon rocks hard. They're not indie rock in any sense of the term I guess, but they're just plain ol' kick ass music to get down to and drink to and kill stuff to, etc. I think that's what rock should be, generally...
I adore metal as a genre, but not much had excited me for a long time until I heard Leviathan. A band I have always admired for their independent ethos is Fugazi, although to sit through an album of theirs is pretty hard work.

Fugazi rocks harder and more intelligently than any metal band I've had the unfortunate displeasure of hearing. I just don't think I will ever enjoy the inspirational force behind writing the same double bass-riding chug-chug song again and again about murder/killing/death/zombies/dragons/blood/feces/whateverthefuckelse. And don't even get me started on Dragonforce (especially those unfortunate people who say they listen to them "ironically").
i think i have a more broad definition of indie than most, but my favs are- the strokes arctic monkeys the arcade fire modest mouse a lot of other bands.
Featured in these forums only so that people will look here first before we get a thousand more “I need suggestions” and “looking for new bands/albums” threads.
