A good year in music is when there's too much good stuff around to keep up with, so you don't even have to look very hard at all. A decent year in music is when there's a few good albums and a couple of great ones to at least keep you occupied. A bad one is when you spend the first three or four months of the year totally bored and wondering when a record you actually like is going to surface. Don't get me wrong, there's been good stuff in '08 (most of it in the last couple of months) but the first few months were the dregs, man. I'm not a hater at all, but I've gotta be honest and say that '08 has not been a very good year so far. With the exception of records by Bon Iver, Spiritualized and Titus Andronicus I haven't been all that excited by much yet. I can say that things are really picking up with TV on the Radio, The Thermals and Okkervil River releasing stuff later this year. Add in The Hold Steady's recent one I think it's only going to get better.
I had a stick of CareFree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor I was back to pondering my mortality.

Like that quote. Anyway, I think this may just be a difference in musical tastes. I have been struggling to catch up all year with great stuff released in 2008. Back on topic - yay for TV on the Radio.

Meh, that sounds a lot like a lazy person's view, than a lover of music's. I mean, if I didn't read any webzines or magazines and only listened to what the mainstream threw at me I would probably have thought that 2007 was a bad year for music. That being said I haven't listened to many great albums this year, but I mean Bon Iver, Venetian Snares, Portishead and Plants & Animals. Also yea TV on the Radio album is a good thing to hear, on a side note new Mercury Rev album leaked...

Actually I didn't think 2007 was all that great either. You basically just echoed exactly what I said, and mentioned a couple of albums from this year that I really like. People tend to think it's cop out to say "it hasn't been a very good year thus far" but isn't it just as much a cop out to say that person is lazy or just isn't looking hard enough? Perhaps that person's opinion actually has some merit. There's probably a hundred good albums released every year, but who the hell has time to listen to every damn thing that comes out in order to find them? All I'm saying is that a good year in music is one that has so much good stuff going on that it finds you.

That's not a very liberal thing for you to say... sorry, couldn't resist. 2007 was better than 2008, but that doesn't mean I was in love with 2007. In fact... the last year I can recall that music completely floored me was 2002, and some of 2004. But that doesn't mean every year doesn't have good releases. Some years just ruin it for the rest of them TV on the Radio is great, and there is nothing wrong with RtCM's production. That being said, I'm glad La La fired Danger Mouse as their producer for the new album. Good call, man.
I'm gonna walk away and start over again.

I think last year hinged on a couple of REALLY fantastic albums (In Rainbows, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, Mirrored, Hissing Fauna, Person Pitch, Strawberry Jam, etc.) from groups/solo artists that were already established, with the exception of the Battles album, though the they did have several EP's dating a ways back and were in bands throughout the 90's (Helmet, Don Caballero, etc.).
'08 seems more like newish bands are taking the reigns, similar to '06, the last year that i really shit my pants over all the good new artists i came to love - Grizzly Bear, Brightblack Morning Light, Girl Talk, Peter Bjorn & John, Man Man, Beach House, Sunset Rubdown, Band of Horses, and TV on the Radio (only their 2nd full-length, so i'll include them - and don't argue with Battles being newer than TV on the Radio because their pedigree goes back far over a decade).
and '08 has been the year of Times New Viking, Vampire Weekend (ewwww), Crystal Antlers, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, No Age, Cut Copy, Titus Andronicus, etc. and so forth.
I'm going to pre-emptively admit that i don't have my iPod with me so i took most of those bands from p4k's best new music selection... Perhaps all of them, but i'm too lazy and hung over to care right now. My point got lost long ago and i don't even remember what it was.
Oh yeah, TV on the Radio is the best American band in existence right now and more people need to figure that out.

Deerhoof's coming out with something new this year? Sweet... I wasn't a fan of Runners Four, but Friend Opportunity kicks my ass whenever I give it a listen. TVOTR and Of Montreal are definitely my most anticipated at this point. 09's lookin decent with new Andrew Bird and Decemberists at least.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.

This, of Montreal and Deerhoof most anticipated for the rest of 08 for me too. Hopefully there's some hidden surprises though... still plenty of year to go. 2009 = Animal Collective + Joanna Newsom. I don't give a crap about anything else

Wow, thanks for sharing that. It sounds awesome. Yet another reason September 23rd is going to be a very big day for me. I'm going to have to start saving up.

Granted I'm not a huge TVoTR fan; I love Young Liars but after that I'm not so enthused, but the new song that's up on their website "Golden Age" is like a combination of Lionel Richie a la Dancing on the Ceiling and a post-punk track. I don't know if thats a good thing.

Well the Lionel Richie part comes in pretty exclusively at the chorus. Apologies to the legions of TVotR fans and the four remaining Lionel Richie acolytes.
