This is a stunning debut. In my opinion, it nearly matches some of My Morning Jacket's best work and is in a completely different league than anything Band of Horses has done.
Based on what I've seen, I predict that this band will continue to make important music for years to come. I'd be very surprised if this were their only good album; the playing, arrangements, and songwriting are just too good. Only time will tell, but I suspect that this album is a classic.

It's a Goldilocks problem. They can't do exactly this again, or they'll be accused of stagnating (*cough*TheStrokes*cough), and if they venture too far away, they may lose the fan base they have now. If they can get it "just right", then your prediction may come true.

its an excellent debut , a complete and cohesive piece of work. I 'm sure they can do even better with their next release if they 'll write more songs like "Mykonos" (it was really a miss not to have it in the album) "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song" or "Your protector" their best song and their strongest melody in my opinion .
By the way , i have to agree that "Blue Ridge Mountains" is one of the best tracks here but every time i hear it , especially in its 1:28 min "But Sean don't get callous,I'm sure it'll be fine.I love you, I love you,Oh brother of mine" it brings me in my mind Spiritualized's " I Didnt Mean To Hurt You"(Let It Come Down)!!!
...and it happens to be my favourite album of the year so far.Its an album that can proudly stand along with Deserter' s Songs , The Soft Bulletin or The Software Slump (some of my fav albums ever) for its quality and beauty.
Seeing them in DC last month was something special. They didn't even play my favorite song ("Ragged Wood"), but Robin sounded like an angel -- even while he was coughing a lung on the stage. During the closer "Oliver James", you could've heard a pin drop it was so quiet.
Harmonies are gorgeous, musically a little simple but still good. My only complaint is some of the intros to their songs (the harmonies) can sound alike but that's not a huge gripe.
The Sun Giant EP sounds starkly different from their debut because they recorded it after the self-titled LP. Even though it came out five months before the LP, they had made those songs after they finished recording for Fleet Foxes.
Personally, I love both of those releases. They sound like a band who has been making music for years and years and if this is the start, I can't for more from them.
By the way, the vinyl edition comes with both the EP and LP in a 2LP set. It's definitely very much worth it.
----- I go to sleep and think you're next to me.
