It has been ages since I have posted on this forum (the whole job thing has really put a damper on the amount of time I can be online). However, 4 of my college friends just finally put the finishing touches on an album that was 4 years in the making. They want unbiased feedback - and given the immense amount of knowledge that the members of this forum have I thought there would be no better place to post the album. The band is from San Diego, they are called Honest Iago, and as far as the genre is considered I would say experimental punk (?).

Please, all advice, criticism, praise, feedback, etc. is greatly appreciated!!!

Here is the press release:

“Straight On ‘Til Morning is the culmination of over four years of writing and recording. Throughout that time members worked and contributed from London, New York, Boston, Paris, Portland, Los Angeles, and the collective’s base in San Diego, California, mailing tracks back and forth and even hammering out a few instrumental parts via Skype.

The band, better described as a collective, is known for their electrifying live performances, usually featuring numerous guest instrumentalists and visual artists. Their music is firmly rooted in Southern California’s punk heritage, but it is their many-layered references to literature, western art, music, and film, coupled with their ability to engineer a cohesive, sprawling narrative from such a wealth of sources that carry Honest Iago into a musical space few bands dare to tread, which they navigate with ease.”

This is rockin' man. Good musicianship.

I'm not a huge fan of punk but they sound toned down enough and there's other non-punk influences showing through that it's more than tolerable, it's good to my ears.

thanks for the feedback! I definitely think the album is worth a listen, plus the link is free. Anyone else have any thoughts?

I appreciate what they're trying to do with the whole indie/experimental/punk thing, but it's been done so many times before, ugh. There's some nice guitar happening, a few catchy riffs but when I want my indie punk I'm going with The Thermals, the Hold Steady, Mission of Burma or even AFI or Thrice...because those bands do it soooo much better.

But like I said, I appreciate their effort.

Are The Hold Steady considered punk?

Anyway, I might as well say it here as well, this is the kind of music I expect to hear on Kerrang i.e. takes itself far too seriously whilst being very generic. O&O described it as "My girlfriend broke up with me while I was doing my senior thesis on Marx"-core elsewhere which I taught was both apt and funny.

So, I thought this sounded a whole lot like Sponge. Is anyone with me on this? Not that sounding like Sponge is a bad thing, it's just similar.

Thanks for sharing.

I'm not really sure why this is in 2009. I'm moving it to indie.
