I like this album quite a bit, though I feel like the first half is clearly superior to the second half. The only misstep to me is "In the Mausoleum." I cannot get into the vibe of this song at all. It just sounds really affected and theatrical to me.

I like the album enough, but I don't think there is anything on it as strong as "Elephant Gun". ---------------------------- There's an ember in the rafters and it's gonna burn this whole thing down.

Perhaps not, but I'm of the persuasion that a great album all the way through outweighs a great song. Not always, though. I listen to the Pipettes' "Pull Shapes" more than TV on the Radio's "Return to Cookie Mountain" these days.

I think ALL of it sounds affected and theatrical. But, I think those are the cornerstones of any Beirut album

I'm just finishing listening to this album right now. I've only been through it maybe 5 or 6 times, and it's been a few weeks since I listened to it. I initially wasn't particularly impressed by it, but I enjoyed it a lot more this time. It might end up making my top 20, but I can't really see it being much higher than in the 15-20 range.

Love this new album. The languid and sincere vocals blend great with the airy, orchestral like instrumentation.

I think Condon is trying to establish himself as more of a singer...like Rufus Wainwright or something. Unfortunately, I think some of Flying Club gets a little carried away with too much theatrics and whimsy...I liked when he just stuck to the interesting instrumentation

"HOOOORNNNNSSSSSSSSSS HOOOOOOORNNNNNNSSSSSSSSSS (wail wail wail wail) HOOOOOORRRNNNNNNNSSSSS" ~Gulag Orkestar Flying Club Cup is a huge step in the right direction as far as instrumentation goes.

I'm sorry, but I had to bring this back, since i wasnt part of the site til a while ago. This album is absolutly mindblowing, fantastic, and is never boring. I listened to it a few times when it came out, and all I could get into was nantes and a sunday smile. I just started listening to it again like 4 months ago, and now not opnly do I like every song, i am obsessed with the cd. Nantes is still the best song, but the whole cd is so flawless. so did beirut break up, or is there gonna be some more music coming?

I think they released another single this year and are still together... As for "The Flying Cub Cup", it was one of my favorite albums from last year, but it hasn't held up well to repeated listening. I think I have only felt the urge to listen to it twice in the last four months or so. Maybe it's more of a fall/winter album for me...
It ain't hallelujah, but it might as well have been.

I didn't care much at all for Gulag Orkestrar, but I've come to like Flying Cup Club quite a bit. I just listened to it again today for the first time in a while. It doesn't blow me away or anything, but it's a good album.

TFCC is definitely still awesome however many months later it has been. (I want to say about 10? Maybe 9.) Also, my last reply in this thread cracks me up, and I still consider it to be true.

haha ya, gulag is pretty much overdone with horns, but is still good. concerning their breaking up, i read on their site about something like that, but couldnt really figure out what they were trying to say. Also, theyve been canceling shows left and right.
