I didn't like Newsom before and I still don't. However, "Ys" is a decent album with some very inventive lyrics (even if they are rather baroque). It is obviously not my cup of tea but I can say it is a largely successful album. Best album of the year? No.

Is "Ys" worth it? Hm...I'd say No. Very much no. The first track ("Emily") is absolutely beautiful and wonderful. The rest of album...blah. Monkey & Bear in particular just grates on my nerves. Starts out sounding like a Mormon hymn, cutesy Renaissance Fair garbage. Yeah. Overrated.

i am in love with this release.

the cd flows from one song to the next effortlessly.

every song is as good as the last.

this comparison could be wrong but if you are into regina spektor you'll more than likly enjoy this cd.

I seem to be following you TYIG! Don't know about the regina spektor thang but I agree that Ys is a wonderful journey from beginning to end. I don't know how anyone can truly say they love the first track or so then find it hit or miss or no good from then on. Methinks such listeners didn't REALLY like emily that much and soon got tired of ms Newsome. BTW - I didn't think that much of her first album (milk eyed mender) for all the reasons people generally dislike this one - try hard english folk whimsy retread etc. This one is a symphony of imagination and intense feeling that transcends such genretyping. End rant!

This is one of the more baffling statements I've ever read on here.

I think this is one of those cases where "maybe what I see as 'blue' is what he sees as 'red'."

But I think he might be blind.

ha. i didnt compare the two but simply was trying to say that if you liked reginas voice you could dig joanna's thats all.

i know the two styles are like apples and oranges. i guess the only two things in common they have is my love for their voice.

It's cool, Thom. Shrug it off - they're just messing around a little. Everyone miscommunicates from time to time.

I've yet to hear anything from Regina, so I have no idea if the comparison is valid. Somehow I doubt that I will ever see someone who reminds me of Joanna Newsom though Wink

I often find myself wondering what it would be like to hang out with Joanna Newsom. Not sure why. I can't figure out if she would be fun, cool, or too serious or "weird for the sake of weird"....Some pictures of her, she looks incredibly hot, but others...notsomuch.

I'd like to think she's a fairly "normal" 24 year old...but she's probably not much fun.

Sorry for wasting your time.

Well, I could try to have her babies, but I think I would have Less_Success than if she had mine.

Oh man, I am lame.

After reading this and the Jenny Lewis thread in Folk, why isn't there a 'hot babes of music' thread?

I agree Ms Newsom is very tasty - even more so since I thought from her voice and orchestral harping that she'd look more like the midget medium from poltergeist.

Regina Spektor would be at the top of my 'Celebrity To Do' list.

I don't think anyone can really beat Chan Marshall(Cat Power). She's quite beautiful.

Tessie Brunet, drummer for Deadboy & The Elephantmen, is also pretty hot in a Suicide Girls kind of way.
