I think you'd be better off surfing these forums and read for yourself what others suggest. That way, you can avoid humor/sarcasm/snobbish retorts. People here tend to get defensive when outsiders want to enter their realm. Enjoy your newfound music.

No prob. I'd start with My Morning Jacket. If you're new to the genre, this is a good place to start. They are an indie band with mainstream talent and appeal. Definitely one of my favorites.

I would recommend Spoon's "Girls Can Tell". Very accessible, and hooky as hell. I would also second P-Bo as far as MMJ. Both of these bands are tremendous talents, with different styles.
Originally posted by EmoPanda: Hey lads. I wasn`t much into indie till recently, so wanted someone to recommend me something along the lines of these:
Bright Eyes (lots of decent stuff in my opinion, Fevers And Mirrors, I'm Wide Awake, Lifted)
Arcade Fire (Funeral)
Radiohead (OK Computer)
The Decemberists (Picaresque)
The Killers (singles like Mr. Brightside, All These Things I've Done, Somebody Told Me)
Lambchop (Is A Woman)
Modest Mouse (the only album I've heard is Moon and Antarctica and - that would be my fav - the Float On single)
The Flaming Lips (Yoshime Battles the Pink Robots, fav single is same album, Yoshime Pt. 1 and Fight Test maybe)
The Velvet Underground (just about anything)
Many thanks in advance.
Ignoring the Killers, which don't belong in the company of those artists, I'd say you'd like Spoon, like the above post, maybe the Shins and the New Pornographers, the Mountain Goats, the Eels, Islands, Beck, Alejandro Escovedo, maybe Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and Wilco.

I'll second the Spoon recommendation, only I would recommend their latest, Gimme Fiction. I think it's their best work, though I think I'm probably in the minority in that opinion.
It's kind of hard to recommend too much based on the bands you listed since they're all pretty different from each other, (I'd second P-Bo's suggestion of looking elsewhere on the site), but I'll take a stab at it anyway.
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (Somewhat like the Decemberists, only a million times better).
Songs: Ohia - Magnolia Electric Co (Similar to Lambchop in some ways. I love everything Jason Molina does. This is generally considered his best album, and I think it's his most accessible.)
Delgados - Hate (It's kind of got that epic quality that The Moon and Antarctica and Ok Computer pulled off brilliantly.)
I could say a thousand others, but there's really no point. I'll stop there.

Elliot Smith - "Either/Or" Ryan Adams - "Heartbreaker" Devendra Banhart - "Cripple Crow" Belle & Sebastian - "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" Bloc Party - "Silent Alarm" Interpol - "Turn on the Bright Lights" Les Savy Fav - "Inches" The National - "Alligator" Pavement - "Brighten the Corners" Sparklehorse - "It's A Wonderful Life"
----- Use all your well-learned politesse or I'll lay your soul to waste.

Spoon is a good "starter" band. And I'd agree with RL that "Gimme Fiction" is their best. Now we can both be in the minority.
And yes, "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" is at least a million times better than the Decemberists. And I like the Decemberists! EmoPanda, you will either love this album like no other you've ever heard, or at least be able to tell those of us who do that we're all insane. Either way, you'll have a home here once you've formed an opinion on it.
I love ALL of Pavement and all of Malkmus, but I'm starting to notice more recommendations of LATE Pavement, so maybe pE and LT should check out the last two Pavement albums. I know that I love both.

I would agree with the spoon, ryan adams, and belle and sebastian mentions i would also recommend anything rufus wainwright, neutral milk hotel, libertines, jeff buckley (i guess that's not really "indie" per se).
also: kings of leon's "youth and young manhood", wolf parade's "apologies to the queen mary", pj harvey is also very accessible on "stories from the city, stories from the sea" album which features three songs accompanied by thom yorke.

I love all five Pavement albums. Even though "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" is far and away the favorite, I'd recommend any and all of them to anyone even remotely intereted in "indie" rock. I'm pretty psyched that I just discovered that eMusic has all of their singles available for download. Their b-sides are usually great, or at least entertianing.

If you like Lambchop, check out Tindersticks. They've been called the British Lambchop, although 'sticks singer Stuart Staples (who has two solo record) has more of a singing voice and less of a croak.

With the amount of artists mentioned I might need quite some time to try them all out.
Tried Neutral Milk Hotel and the Spoon so far and loved it.
Some of the stuff mentioned appeared quite complicated on a technical level to me, your average MTV repertoire listener, but I guess you just get used to it after a while.
You have all been a great help.

Since your username is EmoPanda, I'd recommend Sunny Day Real Estate's "Diary". I've heard it argued they're closer to real emo (whatever that is), as opposed to hot topic emo that's trendy right now. If you're a part of what I refer to as the sad bastard music society, check out Death Cab for Cutie....Minus the Bear's "Highly Refined Pirates" is decent too.

That's great news that you like NMH. Whenever I can recommend them to someone new, I feel amazing.
You will never hear of this band from anybody else, so please please please listen to Juno. Three guitars, a bass and drums...and some of the most beautiful soul-searching lyrics imaginable. Either of their two full lengths is amazing, "this is the way it goes and goes" or "a future lived in past tense". It's not too experimental either, so you could probably get into them fairly easily. If you do, let me know what you think!
