wow, is this what's being hyped up these days in the blog scene? one listen is difficult enough, and the few melodies that arise out of the scratching bullshit suck anyway.

Actually, people around here have been liking it a lot. Now that it's BNM on Pitchfork, though, I have to avoid it to make sure I don't get pegged as a p4k-slave. Razzer

As "meh" as this album is, this gets its own topic about a score being undeserved? Give me a break... this deserves an 8.1 as much as any other trash p4k jerks off to.

Maybe we should have made a topic when that incredibly boring the pains of being pure at heart album got an 8.4, then again both of us are pretty lazy.

It's not album of the year and probably won't make my top 20, but I've really enjoyed Wavvves for the past few weeks. Unlike other people, I can appreciate simple music for what it is and don't automatically hate it when Pitchfork gives it a good review.

Just because the production is intentionally lo-fi doesn't mean there are no melodies. I hear it said about nearly every band who uses similar production. In fact most every song in Wavvves is based off of a single melody. I'd say they are usually pretty strong, at the very least catchy. As for the album itself, I don't love it, but there's some great stuff on there. It suffers from lack of variation but I think it's pretty well done. Of all the bands exploring this recent trend I'd say Wavves is the most exciting, especially the instrumental tracks.

that's interesting, I feel like this kind of production is employed to hide the fact that there is absolutely no musical ability whatsoever underneath.

Pains of Being.... is just silly fun. Not memorable but enjoyable.

Wavves is what No Age should be but doesn't have the balls to be. Good stuff.

Which is why I'm looking forward to seeing them with Psychedelic Horseshit and my friend's band Fungi Girls (who do the lo-fi thing very well, esp. for a group of youngsters)... maybe they won't bore me to tears like No Age did (even though most of what they played were songs I liked recorded).

Another thing people say about these bands without anything to base it off of. Take Iran for example. They had no problem moving away from the lo-fi sound, their new album is very tight and nowhere near sloppy, as their older albums would lead you to believe. The production is aesthetic, nothing else. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'm sure these bands would do fine in hi-fi, they just choose not to because they don't believe it suits their music.
I suggest you listen to Bird Names- Open Relationship if you want to hear firsthand that musical ineptitude and lo-fi production don't necessarily go hand in hand.
