I don't have any Deerhoof albums but when I saw them supporting Beck and Radiohead in Edinburgh last summer, it was the best gig I've seen in years - Deerhoof, that is - hugely more exhilirating than the other 'bigger' acts higher up the bill.

I had hated Deerhoof. The voice irked me, and the music seemed to go nowhere.
Had.
But after listening to Danielson's Ships yesterday (backing band was Deerhoof) I decided to give them another shot. Something happened, because I LOVE them now. The voice doesn't bother me, and the music is just genius. I've gone through every album from Halfbird to Friend Opportunity and I can't stop listening to this. The Runners Four is definitely my favourite of their collection. But every album is great in its own ways.

I can't wait for Offend Maggie now. Oh, and the way they "leaked" their first song was genius.

I love Satomi's voice, loved it immediately in fact. I think I have a penchant for oddly voiced women though.

Yeah that song leak was pretty cool. I was too lazy to set up the keyboard and play it, so I tried to hum it a few times, see what it was like and get it ingrained in my brain. Unfortunately, I've completely forgotten it.

I'll add to the love for Deerhoof. Fantastic band. Personally, the vocals were never an issue. I've enjoyed them from the first thing I've heard. Aside from the vocals, they have hands down the best drummer I've heard in any recent band. The guitars are amazing as well. I first got into them with Runners Four and worked my way back to Reveille from there. I'd now say Apple O is their best, but Reveille is right there. Both of those will probably be in my top 20ish of the decade. Runners Four and Friend Opportunity aren't too far behind. I'd guess they're top 50 of the decade material to me. Milk Man I'm sure will fit into the top 100 somewhere. I can't wait to hear their next one.

Yeah, I can have an all-night binge-drinking tear on his drumming alone. Especially on Runners Four, but I've listened to that one a lot...

Really? I prefer his drumming on the more spastic stuff... Meh, whatever floats your boat i guess.

Man, seeing Saunier live is ridiculous and, contrary to some people's opinion, i feel he is the heart of the band. They stuck him center stage in the front while everyone else played behind him (his set had a bass drum, snare, hi-hat, ride cymbal, and maybe one other tom)... The man gets a lot out of nothing.

exactly what i said a few pages ago...i've actually never seen him use more than the bass drum snare, hi hat, and ride/crash (don't remember what he was using). in fact, he actually uses an interesting hi hat...the cymbals for the hi hat are huge and sound almost like to crashes on top of one another. he definitely gets more out of that drum kit than most drummers can get with a huge set up.

he's definitely the heart of the band. last time i saw them, he was put up front stage right, and it was nice to see him up front.

I have a thing for female Japanese singers' voices (well, not just their voice.. I'd love to show Yasuko from Melt-Banana how I do)

I said I listened to Runners Four a lot. It's a great album and a total package, so I respect his drumming here more for melding with its surroundings and still kicking ass. So shove your "meh" straight up your ass. Which I'd like to lick.

(The last sentence is something JGlass would be thinking, not me.)

Yeah I saw a vid of them playing live, and Greg Saunier was what I was looking at mostly. Holy shit, I need to see these guys live. I love his work on the mid song freakout of 'Siriustar', just as that awesome riff starts again, and the noise explosion after "make a wish come true". Go on listen to it now everybody, I guarantee you will be awed, totally.

My friend always disses Deerhoof because of their simple and somewhat childlike lyrics. To me that just adds to their style and Satomi childlike vocals.

It sounded like the album was awkwardly sequenced until i realized i downloaded the album all out of order.

It's more Runner's Four than Friend Opportunity, which i feel is a definite plus (though Friend Opportunity was great), though i will have to re-sequence it so it's in the correct order to see if it flows as seamlessly as Runner's Four.

I can't think of another band that's released 6 amazing albums this decade, but Deerhoof pulled it off somehow (and i consider Milk Man as one of the 6, though others would disagree).

OFFEND MAGGIE IS FREAKING AMAZING.

"My Purple Past" is my current favorite.

Can't wait to hear it, think I'll give the leak a miss for this one and let the anticipation build and all. Great to see the good vibes. I thought Friend Opportunity was good enough, but I'm kinda hoping for better with this one. Deerhoof haven't yet quite made a flawless piece of work IMO, despite being so consistent - hopefully this is it.
