I think the last 2 lines of that post should become your signature Eric... Big Grin
I for one would be quite happy to see them popping up everywhere on the boards... Wink

Wow..aren't moderators supposed to encourage lively discussion, and not sack it with (apparently carefully edited) frat boy-level comments like that?

I'm seeing less and less reason to stick around this place...

I'm sorry you feel that way, C., I enjoy your contributions.

I don't think a call-out of pE is warranted, though. Harper Bruce isn't exactly inviting a high level of discourse here and despite your admirable efforts to address him seriously, I don't think you're in any danger of being engaged in kind. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I don't see it happening.

Moderating online forums pretty much means a percentage of the membership will always be pissed of at you for one perceived slight or another. The rest probably think they can do a better job and who knows, they might be right. The best any moderator can do is try to be fair and make the community a better place for as many of its members as possible. pE does an exemplary job of that.

Moderators, too, should be entitled to their opinions and stating them, even in strong terms, doesn't equate with sacking the discussion.

I hope you don't read this as an indictment of you, C., but rather as props to pE for the good work that he does here. He doesn't get near enough credit and plenty is due.

It was carefully edited only in that I came back and changed something I had misspelled. And I was just responding absurdly to a pretty absurd comment: if you don't 'get' Malkmus' lyrics, you're not as deep as I am. You don't have to find my comment funny, or clever, or even worthwhile, but it was meant to respond to Harper Bruce's attacks on everyone who doesn't know Malkmus like he does, and not on your (or mark f's) attempt to explain the meaning of "Transport is Arranged." It didn't occur to me, as I was replying, that anyone would take my absurd comment seriously, but if you did, it would be insulting to you. My apologies.

My comment was, of course, totally tongue-in-cheek, although it is directed at a particular subset of Pavement fans: the ones who are overtly rude and condescending about their undying love for all things Malkmusian. We've had several in and out of these Forums over the years and they simply want to tout their love for Pavement and insult anyone who disagrees.

OK, I misread that one. After all, I *was* deconstructing Pavement lyrics, and so naturally the comment seemed to be in my direction.

There have been times on this forum where I've posted an innocent offering and someone responded by taking a crap on it. But that will happen on any forum...all is good Smiler

It's also hard to catch irony and absurdity unless someone slips an emoticon in there. Sometimes jokes just don't fly as well when they are just words on a page...

Then again, maybe mine just wasn't funny. Although Frank liked it... Big Grin

I went searching for a Malkmus thread about the upcoming album, but it seems to be gone (did I dream this?). Anywho, I found this and it made me laugh.

Westerberg on all counts.

I think this is a pretty tough call. When Westerberg is on, his stuff blows everything Malkmus has done out of the water. "Unsatisfied", "Seen Your Video", "Alex Chilton", "Bastards of Young" - Malkmus has never written a song that was as good as these, in my opinion. However, I do find Pavement's albums more engaging on the whole (with maybe the exception of Let It Be.) Westerberg is certaily a better lyricist, but Malkmus has an impressive feel for great vocals that fit the song perfectly. In the end I'd give a slight nod to Malkmus only because I like Pavement a little more then The Replacements, even though both were great bands. Keep in mind that I'm totally unfamiliar with either's solo careers.
