I'm not even sure if I'm still allowed to make a thread like this, but whatever. My brother's girlfriend listens to a lot of garbage pop music (britney spears, mariah, the buffy soundtrack?) but recently asked for me to point her in the right direction for indie female artists. I turned her on to Lily Allen (I'm not a huge fan but it beats britney) and am thinking about feist and pj harvey. Can you guys mention some other pop friendly female vocalists?

Thanks.

I'm confused about this thread and I don't want to seem like a Newman or anything. I mean, couldn't you just have scanned the forums yourself and found suggestions instead of posting this? I guess I can let this stay open for now but honestly, I don't see the point.

I didn't find anything for female-lead stuff, except for the female fronted rock bands in the Rock forums. This is a pretty good thread, I added it to the "Recommendations" thread at the top of these forums.

I'd also suggest the very terrific Björk.

Thanks a lot guys, Blonde Redhead is one of my favorite groups but I didn't really consider presenting them to her. I'll most certainly pass along the recommendations. Smiler

Joanna Newsom deserves a mention. Besides, doesn't everyone here love her?

Jesse Sykes
Marissa Nadler
St. Vincent
Kathleen Edwards
Sera Cahoone

As a side note, maybe the topic name should be changed to something more meaningful, like "Female Indie Artists"?

Michelle Shocked: Short, Sharp, Shocked is THE SHIT! One of the greatest albums ever. (Make sure you listen to it on a massive stereo.)

If she's one of those weird girls that loves everything 80s then Hounds of Love would be a great option.

She probably already does like Feist, even if she hasn't realized it yet.

She'd probably love M.I.A. Maybe try Peaches? (gross)

The Long Blondes are pretty damn pop friendly. So is CSS.

Fiona Apple.
Fiona Apple.
Fiona Apple.

The most underrated artist of the last 15 years.
Just give her, When the Pawn..., tell her to listen to "Get Gone" and watch how much she loves it.

You don't have to be a weird girl to appreciate this album. While I may be a little weird at times I'm certainly a boy, and I think Hounds Of Love is one of the best and most interesting albums of all time.

Oh, and by the way, I think the best way to make her open up to better and more challenging music, is to start very softly so she is not turned off in the beginning. I'd say start with Pink or Avril Lavigne, and only then continue with more indie stuff. And make sure to introduce her to the more poppy part of indie in the beginning. Songs by belle and sebastian and the like. I'd say wait a bit with Blonde Redhead and certainly a bit longer with Deerhoof.

Update: Thanks a lot for all of the responses. I gave her the following:

Fiona Apple - Tidal, When the Pawn, & Extroaordinary Machine
Lily Allen - Alright, Still (this was actually what started the discourse she liked the single "Smile" and wanted to see what else there was)
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
Tori Amos - American Doll Posse
Joanna Newsome - Ys
Kate Nash - Made of Bricks

I also loaded some individual tracks from some of the more 'difficult' listens and included the more accessable tracks along with some trip-hop.

Charlotte Hatherly
A couple Massive Attack songs ("Teardrop" especially)
A few Morcheeba songs
Portishead
Adele
Feist
PJ Harvey
Blonde Redhead
Cat Power
A few tracks from The New Pornographers
Thao Nguyen
Zero 7

I am unfamiliar with a lot of the mentions here and will check some of it out for myself. Thanks again, everybody.

You missed Shara Worden from My Brightest Diamond? She could be the best of the bunch IMHO, and I love Neko Case.
