those are two pretty unique bands, good selections.
for unicorns, try "islands" which is headed by j'aime tambeur who is one of the founding fathers of the unicorns.. shapes and sizes are another unicorn type band, wolf parade, megadeath etc.
thee more shallows.. tougher call. these guys are defanitely pretty strange. go with the suggestions for unicorns and see if they float your boat.

However, I master the trick just like Nixon Causin terror, quick damage ya whole era
Thee More Shallows is a pretty unique band. Really, I can only tell you a few bands that share aspects of their music.
Grandaddy - Grandaddy oftentimes exhibit similar uses of electronics and also sometimes have the same kind of epic feel to their songs as TMS
The Knife - They're more electronic and use electronically distorted vocals, but they write similarly dark yet catchy songs, especially on Silent Shout.
The Notwist - Electronica fused with pop to create incredible soothing yet powerful songs. Less dynamic than TMS.
Thom Yorke - His solo album, The Eraser reminds me of TMS at times with its sometimes apocalyptic feel and dark electronic noises.
M83 and Nathan Fake - Dissimilar to TMS in that these are purely electronic acts without vocals, but the epic, often dark keyboard and electronic noises share much in common with TMS.
Again, you'd never mistake any of these artists for TMS, but they all share a thing or two incommon with them, and that's about as close as you're going to get I think.

For thee more shallows esque bands try Appleseed Cast and maybe a little Sufjan Stevens. Also, Rogue wave is a mellow indie/alt band that I really like.
If you like the twisted techno/Hip hop parts of "The Unicorns" you should check out the band "Think about Life". Very experimental, but they have some really good stuff for only releaseing one album. Check out the songs "Money" and "What the Future Might Be".

well i can't exactly say that our music is all that similar.. but i'm in a band called Unsolved Mysteries and when we opened for Thee More Shallows they really loved us. just thought i'd throw in that quick plug
if i were you, i'd also check out 'Good Morning Spider' by Sparklehorse and 'Burner' by Odd Nosdam. Nosdam played a little bit on the newest TMS album, and designed the cover art as well. his music is very atmospheric, but with the occasional hard beat thrown in. he also shares that same grainy digital lofi aesthetic that TMS and the Unicorns have
Also, my favourite band - The Cooper Temple Clause, recently split up but some of their b-sides are quite experimental and sound a bit like thee more shallows older stuff.
for those interested check out On. Off. On One Quick Fix Our Eyes Are Bright Lapitu (Bedtime Story) Resident Writer Habit of a Lifetime Not Quite Enough I’ll Still Write My Darling (Nasty Angel)
I really enjoy Thee More Shallows and The Unicorns too. I don't agree with some of the suggestions previously made like Mates Of State or Sufjan Stevens being similar, but The Notwist is a perfect fit. I suggest: Michael Johnson-Nonsense Goes Mudslide Solo record by one of the members of Holopaw White Flight-White Flight Has some 'Unicorns-ish' hip-hop breakdowns and funky electronics AM Syndicate-Empire Check out the song 'Textura Aspero' Lansing-Dreiden-The Incomplete Triangle Catchy
Also some acts on Thee More Shallows latest record label, Anticon, are pretty sweet. It might be stretching the similarity thing but that Why? album Elephant Eyelash is quotable.
Although the music isn't that similar to The Unicorns, fellow Canadians Lovely Feathers display a kindred sense of humor with 2006's "Hind Hind Legs." Maybe worth the listen?
