& I was actually not sure if I'd heard an indie band or just a rock band *I'd* never heard of, but I need to know who sings this lyric.

I was in the mall & heard a catchy song playing in a store. Of course the employees were zero help, but I managed to hear these lyrics:

"Power to be in the key of C...."

Male singer, (indie?) rock, sort of retro 80s sound w/ some keyboard action thrown in, mid-tempo.

Any ideas?

There's a Wilco song with a similar lyric which I bet is what you heard. It goes "We fell in love, in the key of C".

The song is "Shot in the Arm" off of Summerteeth. Great song off of a great album and if you don't own it, I'd strongly recommend it.

Sampled it on Amazon.com & unfortunately, that wasn't it. Frowner Damn. My memory of it is fading now...

But the Wilco song was catchy. Sounded very reminiscent of the Beatles & Jeff Lynne's work.

There's a Jim Noir song called "Key of C". Try it out, maybe? It doesn't sound like Jim Noir, but I'm not very familiar with his stuff (only ever heard one or two songs.)

EDIT: Actually I just sampled this, and I'm pretty much sure that this is what you're looking for. The lyric is actually "I want to be in the key of C", but it's not that clear what he's saying.
