I agree its amazing.

I'm on new music overload with this, Shins, Menomena. I'm still trying to give Deerhoof a chance as well.

Of Montreal is streaming here.

It's good, but I hesitate to call it great.

"The Past Is a Grotesque Animal" is the song of the year so far. Fuggin' instense.

I agree about Grotesque Animal, that song is awesome. I've seen "this new record is great, except for that 11 minute piece of shit in the middle, avoid that one" so many times when people talk about the record; I don't get it.

p.s. i have streamed this album about four million times already, and i can't wait to buy it.

"the past is a grotesque animal" makes my head hurt.

in the good way.

that's spacey vocal line repeated over and over and over starts to drill a hole in my skull. that's why my head hurts.

good record though.

I'll 3rd or 4th the "past is a grotesque animal" noms. That song is so freaking bad ass. Talk about intense. And after 11 minutes you don't want it to end. That's pretty hard to pull off.

I love this record, even more than I did Satanic Panic Attack. It's a bit front loaded, but all the songs are at least good. "The Past is a Grotesque Animal" is one of my favorites throughout. I don't know how it succeeds though. It has no hook or melody in it, and it extremly repetitive, but I love it's intensity enough to call it a great song.

Exactly, I just thought of that too. After eleven minutes, you dont want it to end, very true.

Stand out tracks are in in my opinion:
1. Suffer For Fashion
2. Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse
3. A Sentence of Sorts in Kongsvinger
4. The Past Is a Groteque Animal
5. We Were Born The Mutants With Leafling

I disagree that the album is front-loaded. The back half may not be as catchy or melodious, but the second is a lot more mature especially how it incorporates funky basslines, and a hint of jazz. The last song is probably my favorite other than the epic "The Past Is a Grotesque Animal".

ANd lest anyone think that this thread is comprised of the responses from a gaggle of Of Montreal fans, I just want to point out that this is the only album of theirs I own. Much of their previous records were a little too twee and surgary for my liking, and while this album has moments of that kind of pop, the complexities, experimentation, and overall growth outweighs those brief moments.

Pick up this album.

I can not stop listening to this... it's cheered me up all throughout midterm week. I keep sending the streaming link to all my friends, and none of them have a single negative thing to say about it. I can see this being a top 5 album this year, easily, unless it turns out to be the best year ever for music or something.

"LET'S TEAR OUR FUCKING BODIES APART!"

I've listened to a lot of Of Montreal, and I'll go as far as to say it's their best record. Definitely their most consistent, easily listenable record to date (previously they seemed a lot more song oriented, Sunlandic Twins comes to mind here) and by doing something very different than their other stuff, taking up the seriousness a notch and getting more into rhythm and funk I think they really pulled it off. Maybe the best record I've heard so far this year.

Which - with new albums from Radiohead, Wilco, Arcade Fire, Animal Collective and Bjork on the way - very well could be.

That's the only reason I'm not 100% sure this album will be one of the best of the year.

this is a sleeper hit. i've been listening to this, along with the new menomena album, crazily.

I'm not too sure the rest of the new albums from Radiohead, Wilco, Arcade Fire, Animal Collective and Bjork will be that great.

Radiohead and Wilco will be good, maybe even really good (they've proven that they are consistent) but I'm not sold on the new arcade fire material i've witnessed via youtube. as for animal collective and bjork, i doubt they can top this album.
This album will not end up being the best of the year, though, because there is a lot more stuff to come, besides the aforementioned bands. I think it will still be in the top 5 of my end of year list, but it won't hold the top spot.

Yeah, I agree Arcade Fire is extremely dissapointing (at least for me). I wasn't looking for a "Funeral 2" but it's just a bit over-the-top.
