Hey

Do you guys have any bands in mind who're doing something really fresh? This might sound a bit weird, but my playlist lately is getting really boring... a lot of the albums that I used to enjoy are getting pretty old to me (I got bands like Arcade Fire, Sufjan, Andrew Bird, Beirut, Radiohead, the Flaming Lips, Broken Social Scene, Belle & Sebastian, etc.).

Do you think maybe I should try some classic rock or maybe some electronica (although I listen to Daft Punk) for some new interesting sounds? Maybe some punk? Anyways, good suggestions are always helpful!

Thanks.

I've been listening to a lot of the same things as you. I find a good change of pace to be something by The Thermals or Ted Leo/Pharmacists. I'm actually interested in other recommendations that might fit this bill as well. Something more uptempo, with more energy I guess.

When I get in an indie "rut" like that, I like to go back and discover some old stuff. Last year I finally got around to listening to Mission of Burma, Joy Division, Husker Du, My Bloody Valentine...There's probably a lot of "old" bands out there that would not only break you out of your routine, but lead you to other lesser known modern acts that you hadn't heard of already.

@ JGlass

I know stickies are great. I checked that thread already and its not very specific to my request as many of the bands listed there are the "greatest," which is a lot like the sounds I've been hearing over last few years.

Btw, does something like punk indie really exist nowadays? Or is all punk pretty much the generic shit you hear on mainstream waves?

Maybe you need to really throw yourself a curveball. Listen to some rap (not that I have any recs in that category) or some crazy-ass black metal (which I can give you a ton of names).

I listen to a very great deal of music and have never once been in this situation, I think that it indicates that you may not be as proactive as you should be. Honestly, instead of waiting for us to spoonfeed you something (a lot of the stuff you may have already heard) why not browse the forums and look up bands that you haven't heard of? That's what I do.

In addition to that, I find that many around here are very quick to disregard particular genres (another reason they may become bored). If you stay active in several supergenres the music will stay fresh.

Those are my 'recommendations,' I hope it helps.

It's not like you can't google any band and find a sample of their music. Sheesh.

P.S. If your library is lacking in electronica or hip-hop, you could check out the threads dedicated to the releases of this year in that subgenre, that should keep you really busy. You could also check out our 'best of' lists in the year threads...

No way. There are way too many threads here with great recommendations floating around, even besides the ton mentioned in the featured topic.

Anyways, this reminds me a lot of this topic. Check that one out.
