Easily the most hyped film of 2008, the Dark Knight appears to be poised to take the box office and critics alike. Just wondering what everyone thoughts are on a movie that's been getting great reviews and has the fanbase to where fanboys post angry comments if a reviewer says the Dark Knight isn't a masterpiece. Oh yes and everyone is convinced Heath Ledger will get an Oscar.

I gotta admit, I wasn't too sure about the direction they were taking the Clown Prince of Crime. When I first read that Heath Ledger had won the role, I was left scratchin' my noggin. I mean... this guy is playin' The Joker? Then I read about the messy make-up, the "carved smile" and how he was gonna be "more sociopathic than The Joker of the comics"! I was all, 'HOLD ON A SECOND!!!! This is a guy who shot Batgirl in the back for giggles and beat a teenaged Robin to death with a crowbar as he laughed maniacally! How do you make him worse than that????!!!!' But then I saw the first trailer and heard the voice and witnessed the mannerisms... AND GOOD GRAVY I GOTTA SEE THIS MOVIE! He does indeed look crazy as a loon and there were shots of him really enjoying the chaos he was creating. Which means they changed him quite a bit, but stayed true to his character. And I like that alot! I'm also looking forward to getting a proper Two-Face. Just seeing Tommy Lee Jones in the previews of that awful abomination disgusted me to no end (I still, to this very day, haven't seen the movie) and I'm NEEDING to see him done right!

I dunno about that. It might be one of those "In Honor of..." kinda things, but if his performance is truly Oscar worthy- I just dunno. He's never "wowed" me in anything before... but there's a first time for everything!

Dang, Liberalkid, how could you get back from the movie and NOT wanna type about it?! What'd you think of it? I liked it! I liked it alot! Ledger's Joker was dead-on to the personality that I've always loved The Joker for! I only have one question for those of you that have seen the movie: Did they kill Two-Face? My friends thought they did, but I could swear that his open eye moved a little when Batman moved his head over to the side. Please tell me you guys saw that too! Don't let 'em have killed off Two-Face! That would suck!!!!! (Not the movie, but the death of such a fantastic villain. That is what would suck.)

In response to MonkeyBoy, I saw no indication that he was alive but bruce got up and ran away from that same fall, so I mean its plausible he lived.
Yea I thought it was good and bordering on great, I would have written about it sooner but after I got back it was like 4 am because I hung out with my friend awhile and my wireless didn't want to work. Ledger's performance was definitely the best part of the film.
I really think since Ledger died, the movie has WAY too much hype and I have a gut feeling it's really gonna suck. But I've definately been wrong before.
It definitely does not suck. I like the crime drama tone that the film goes for and mostly succeeds in capturing.
It's an entertaining and thoughtful film, if a little heavy handed thematically at times. It's certainly not perfect, and I have slight quibbles about it here and there, especially the sonar cell-phone detection shit that I felt brought a campy and corny quality to an otherwise gritty story, but overall I dug it.

I actually thought that was kinda cool! It gave 'em a good excuse to use the "white eyes" look of the comics. Sure, it coulda been done a little better, but I still gotta give 'em kudos for tryin' it out!

Hmmm. But I mean the thing is, like I said the film had the tone of a true to real life cops and robbers flick and of a down to earth drama. Then a scene like that, which felt like something out of the movie Daredevil, seems like a gimmicky plot development that felt out of place in that world. In a more true to form comic book movie that probably would have fit right in, but in the context of this one I felt like it was pretty silly.

If that's how you wanna see it, but I find this movie to be a comic book movie in its truest form. This is how fans have been seeing the comics for years. The "bat-sonar" isn't an unheard of concept in Batman's world. One instance that instantly springs to mind is the episode "Blind as a Bat" from the animated series. And if you wanna call that show silly...

Yeah, I agree. I think it is the best adaptation of a comic book as well. Outside of that scene, which felt a bit like the typical Hollywood take on comic books, ie, Daredevil. The swooping 3d shots and with white eyed batman being given Matrix style updates by Morgan Freeman kind of irritated me and struck me as being too gimmicky in the context of the story. It was like...too easy. It took away from the climax of the final confrontation between Batman and Joker to have some gadget that pinpoints his location and allows Batman to spoil all his plans. It felt kind of contrived and removed a lot of the human element. Maybe it was in line with Batman's usual gadgets, but it was the one moment in the film as I look back that really feels out of place and over the top.
I loved it so much I think I’ll go and see it again.
Heath Ledgers interpretation of the Joker was brilliant. During the scene when the Joker gives Two-Face the gun in the hospital, I was hoping that Two-Face would try to shoot the Joker only to have the gun fire a flag with a “BANG!” written on it. I loved the Joker monologues when he talks about how he got his scars, Heath definitely stole the show.

Well my last post was completely wrong; the movie was amazing and Ledger was brilliant. The bat sonar stuff was a little unrealistic but when you think about it so is a man dressed as a bat flying through windows.
My only complaint with the film (if you could call it a complaint) was that it felt too long. It feels like they could have shortened some scenes, but when I look back, I don't know what they would cut out. Everything had a purpose. Also, it didn't feel as cohesive as Batman Begins, but as a whole, Dark Knight is better.
