I was quite surprised just now to discover that this board did not have a topic devoted to Harry Potter yet.

I just finished the sixth one yet, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm a huge fan of the series. If nothing else it excells at keeping me entertained, which happens to be why I read books in the first place.

Thoughts on the series? Speculation? Favorite books, moments, characters? The place for all that is here.

I reserve the right to be entirely wrong.

I think that the series rocks. So far, I think that the Half Blood Prince is the best, and my favorite character until what happens in Book 6 was Dumbledore and I also like Hermonie and Ginny. Smiler

this series is great, and i just cant wait for seven. J.K. Rowling did a great job building up the suspense. the sixth was not my favorite only because it was too depressing for me. the fifth on the otherhand was not too depressing, and a hell of alot more mature than the rest of them. i thought that it was pretty pathetic that harry, and ron did not have any relationships wih girls at all until they were at the age of fifteenl, and sixteen. i understand the circumstances for harry, but ron is just pathetic.

6th is #2 on my list, right after PoA. Hermione and Ron still ignore their feelings for each other (Will they ever come to terms with themselves? Lets hope so) Good to see Harry with someone who isn't a heartbroken 'human hosepipe' who cant think of anyone other than her former boyfriend.

I heard the most ridculous thing a few weeks ago. Apparently, about 7000 Harry/Hermione relationshippers have signed a petion to try and BAN book 7 from being sold (anywhere) if J.K.R. doesn't have to two of them have a relationship, and stating that J.K.R. will lose 50% of her fan base. I thought, why waste your time? J.K.R. doesn't listen to lunatics like you, and she doesn't care if she loses 50% of her fans to a H/H problem, cuz shes gunna lose the other 50% if the Ron/Hermione thing isnt resloved. I mean come on, how dumb do you have to be to say something like that? Idiots....

My school is actually having a class next semester devoted to reading Harry Potter. Having Popular Culture as a minor is awesome.

read the first two and enjoyed them a good deal. I love the story of how Rowling got the story idea in her head, fleshed out the books and bonked them out. What a magical mind she has. Smiler She did a good thing for the literary community.

I love all the Harry Potter books, generally I've felt that Rowling has stayed loyal to her original fan base, in that her books have matured, as the fans have also. This is apparent, in the literary style, language, and stories of the older books, see book 5 with it's political sub-plot, and book 6 with it's horcruxes.

I think, despite many critics, that Rowling is a national treasure, bringing joy to so many people around the world. The fact remains that reading isn't all that popular, I love it, but many people avoid it, and the potter series has brought mainstream meaning back to the mases.

Book 7 is apparently, "My favourite of all the books" - Rowling.

I think I fit the 'caual fan' description, because I have only read each book once and never felt inclined to revisit them.

PoA is my favourite, as it manages to propell the story further while working strongly as a stand alone story. HBP is probably my second favourite losing out only because it feels like preamble for the final book. GoF is by far my least favourite, it's just too boring (I never got past pg100 or so and I've tried a few times).

My biggest credit to Rowling as an author is that she has managed to let the books mature with her audience (the fact that an adult version of the new book is being released as well as a child version is testament to that).

P.S- I don't think Sirius is really dead.

I don't think Sirius is did either. In fact, everyone would be inclined to agree with you there, considering he hasn't died in the books as yet. I assume you meant Dumbeldore, but I understand your theory, god knows there's enough of them floating about.

Completely agree with your choices for favourite book though.

Oh...another Potter thread. So here I go again. I have an idea for ending the series that has Harry Potter surviving but not dying in the final book but where he ends back in the real world of muggles without his powers but able to cope with the muggle world as an adult.

I know that this is an old post but I just saw it and I can see where you are coming from. I was in the same boat as you when I was reading the 4th book. All the details around Harry seeing what was happening in his dream, a whole chapter devoted to his scar (which we already knew about because she talks about it in each book) visiting the Burrow, walking to the portkey and then the campsite at the World Cup and then…zzz…zz…zzzzzz…zzzzzzzzzzz. Oops, sorry, fell asleep.

Well anyways, past all of that there is a great story with some of the best moments in the series. There are some parts in this book where you can realize that these kids are truly growing up. So I think you should give it another shot, get past those 100 pages and then enjoy the rest of the book.

I thought the second book was the most boring (it's also the shortest or 2nd shortest, funny huh?). I actually liked the 4th and 5th books, which lots of people tout to be the most boring. Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Well I finished the sixth book and I did like it. I think that it made me realize that maybe The Order of the Phoenix was my favorite book. This one was more about Dumbledore and Harry, whereas the previous ones were about Harry and some or all of his friends. I did like it though, even though I found it to be rather depressing.

I was particularly excited about Harry and Ginny’s relationship. I thought it was a nice payoff with the way that it built. I just wish that Rowling would go into more detail about their relationship. Obviously they are just teenagers so they have to have some serious emotions going on there. Then again it doesn’t really compare to what Harry is feeling about in terms of his life, loss of greatest mentor and the ultimate trial he now faces.

I did like it and I am even more looking forward to see how it all ends.

You know I was actually never able to get myself involved in the Harry Potter books! When they first came out it just seemed like it was a "jump on the bandwagon" type of thing -- I'm thinking now I should give it anoother chance :-]
