ok so i read this book when i was a sophomore in Highschool (2004) I remember really liking it but when something reminded me of it just yesterday i couldn't remember anything from it (title, author, even plot line)

All i remember was that there was this boy who was either born blind or became blind...then i think could eventually see colors or lights or something...he is also very special for some reason (like a power he has that has something to do with his eyes)...his story dealt a lot with his mom...then there is this rich, young guy who is totally unrelated that for some reason has to kill this boy and he goes crazy trying to...they also talk a little about string theory and stuff...

I remember the cover being dark (black and dark red) and the title short (like one-word)

i know this is extremely vague but there has got to be someone who can help so i can finally go to sleep (i have been going alphabetically through book lists trying to see if any thing rings a bell)
