The only one that I have played is Final Fantasy VII and I thought that it was decent. It is the only Final Fantasy that I have actually played and I just wasn't into it. So by default, I must go with it.

I have only gotten very far in FFVII (love it, though).
FFVIII I beat disc one but never continued as I had borrowed it from a friend. FFIX I am currently playing. My Chrono Cross CD doesn't work . I haven't played Legend of Dragoon, but I might someday because it's only like 10 bucks used.
I reserve the right to be entirely wrong.

Legend of Dragoon is the only I haven't played but I'm pretty confident it doesn't come even close to beating FFVII. I've played through all the others and those definitely don't match up with VII. But you could have put one option as FFVII and the other as "Any other game you want" and I still go with VII.

One could certainly be forgiven for never having played Legend of Dragoon or Chrono Cross, but Final Fantasy VII? I'd have thought that everyone who isn't Amish must have played it by now.
And yes, Final Fantasy VII takes the crown. Chrono Cross is probably the best game of the lot by some criteria, but Final Fantasy VII has a lot of sentimental value, being the first RPG I ever played and all.

I think the first true RPG I ever played was Sword of Vermilion, which I recall having the most incredible music, or maybe Hero's Quest (later renamed Quest for Glory because of the board game), though I don't know if it satisfies the RPG criteria (those old Sierra action/adventure games were great, though). I played Final Fantasy VII religiously my freshman year in college, but RPGs – and games in general — haven't really been my cuppa since I moved here in 2000, but I'm always on the look-out for something to pique my interest.

My friend's exactly like that. He abhors RPGs, he says he doesn't understand how people (I, for example) can get into them. He plays everything but RPGs.
I went from hearing about LOD a few minutes ago to a $15 purchase on ebay (including shipping!) and now I'll get to see why this game is so good. I also liked FF9 a lot I think it is underrated. but obviously not as good as 7. Anyone else excited about FF3 for the DS?

I loved watching FF7, although I didn't play it much. Chrono Trigger was great, wish that would come to the GBA, Golden Sun 2 was the only other RPG I ever played - it was fun although I sold it before I got halfway through.
Chrono Cross is my second best game ever. This game was just a little project and productors didn't received a lot of money to make this game, if we compere to other RPGs. And the result = the most weird and intelligent game ever. When I was playing to that game, I always had the feeling that I was lost in all the way...
Not to bash your poll, but its terrible. All except for one of the games were made by Square Enix (or Squaresoft, whatever), and those in the same publisher are basically identical in gameplay and quality. Honestly, I really don't like any of them, and they're all overrated.
Even though I am currently replaying FFVIII, and I'm remembering how awesome it is, I still have to go with FFVIII.
