This game came out over a decade ago, but is anyone else still completely blown away by it? I've been playing it again, and everything about it is as perfect as I remember. It's consistently ranked as one of the all-time greats, and it's no doubt deserving of the praise.

The general atmosphere of the game is so fitting - the music and sound, the look, the feeling of captivity. The gameplay is simple, yet continues to pull you in by spreading out new skills. Even the controls are some of the most elegant I've seen. Everything about Super Metroid is perfectly put together. It may be the last great side-scroller.

I'm replaying this game right now. It's as good as I remember it being...atmosphere, music, tons of secrets. The controls feel a little stiffer than I remember, but maybe I'm still adapting to them.

But:

I don't think so. Cave Story came out quite a few years after SM. That's right. Cave Story. Cave Story. Cave Story...

I only got into Metroid with Prime on the Cube, loved the trilogy and am excited to revisit the first two with Wii control scheme from Corruption, Echoes is possibly my fav game evar.

So I never played the original, then got it for the GBA on the 'Classic Series' they released, paid $9 for it. I think it is gawd awful - can't really get far at all. Frustrating old NES games!!!

I purchased Super Metroid whenever it was released on VC for Wii and never really played it much, if at all.

So it was deleted due to the 'storage space wars' on the wii, with the SD card update I DL'd all my purchases and have been playing this game for the past couple of days - LOVE IT!

It screams old school perfection and the mood is great - it makes me appreciate the job Retro did bringing the IP from 2d to 3d.

The sound and environments are really working to create a great atmosphere to be playing in, I can instantly see why so many people rate the game very high. It deserves it.

Damn. Reading this thread really brought me back. One of my most beloved games ever. Top 3 easy. Great point about the controls; they were beautiful. Samus had some smooth-ass moves.

Makes me wish I still had the old Super NES . . .
