Question:
Several great systems are out that are old, and several don't get the respect they deserve. What do you think? Choices will be before 32 bit systems came out, which means no PSX or N64, and no handheld systems either.

Choices:
NES
SNES
Genesis
Atari 2600
Other (Sega Master System, Brown Box, Intellivision, etc.)

My experience with those systems is somewhat limited, but I do know that I prefer the Super Nintendo BY FAR. The graphics, compared to those others (with certain Genesis games being an excpetion) are far better. The sound quality is terrific. There are so many great games that hail from the SNES. I don't have much experience with the Genesis, but the majority of the experience I do have is of mediocre games. The NES is also a great system, but the Super Nintendo took full advantage of the power increase between in and its predecessor. The SNES is certainly the best system listed, and very much in the running for best system of all time.

I reserve the right to be entirely wrong.

In my opinion the best of the Old systems out there is the SNES. It was the first console i ever played and i had alot of fun with my friends playing it. It is home to some of the most timeless games out there Mario, Contra, Donkey Kong and others.
Other than that I'm still a fan of my old N64. Nintendo's first true 3D console. Games like Super Smash Bros. and Goldeneye keep me coming back. Not to mention the controller which I think is one of the best of all time. The N64 has always been a darkhorse of sorts often taking the back seat at the hands of some of the more stylish games of the PSone, but I still enjoy the great gameplay that the the older Nintendo systems have always offered.

First system I owned was an Atari 2600, got it when I was six or seven years old for Christmas, best xmas ever...
Favorite system of all time was the TG-16. I know it died pretty quickly because NEC didn't do much in North America but most of the games that they released were great. Military Madness and Blazing Lazers I still play regularly.

Spectrum 48k. Legendary little black box replete with springy rubber keyboard, 16 clashing on-screen colours, and a single channel sound-chip. The creativity and invention that programmers had to employ to get playable games out of it still amazes me. Elecric Dreams version of R-Type on the Speccy still my favourite ever coin-op conversion.

Dreamcast.

Best old console period.

Sure it didn't last long, but it had some amazing US and Import games.

I mean just considering Shenmue, Power Stone 2, Skies of Arcadia, Soul Calibur, Ikaruga, etc. it just sticks out to me as the best.

Plus online console game play was really kicked into gear by the DC (Phantasy Star online, Alien Front Online, etc.)

Easily SNES, most of my fondest gaming memories were on the SNES, I remember when I first got it, a friend of mine down the road had one, and I had already played a whole bunch of awesome games like Rock N’Roll Racing, Super Mario World, and I BEGGED my parents for months and months until I finally got one on Christmas day in the Mario All-Stars box set with two controllers. I spent the rest of my Christmas holidays with friends playing heaps of the classics like LOZ Link to the Past, Street Fighter, Megaman X and all the previous games mentioned above.

I'm gonna have to go with the Atari 7800. It wasn't my first system,(Atari 2600), but it was compatable with it. I didn't get the Nintendo until it was nearing its end, so the 7800 kept me satisfied until then. Sega Genesis would have to come in second.

Whatever happened to Pong!

The coolest and most awesomestest ever!
Ok, well it was rather revolutionary, for couple of straight lines and a blip.

Seriously, I would have to say the Atari was the coolest. I had a 2600, and it was awesome. I now have the 2600, 5200, 7800, as well as NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Game Boy, GBA, GBASP, DS, Sega Dreamcast (Superb), Pong System from telegames (Sears), PS2, and just recently got an Xbox. Time and money permitting, I'll get the 360 and a Wii. PS3 is not looking good to me. I'll wait for the PS4 to come out, and get a PS3. Games will be cheaper then too.

The NES is my favorite, but I still miss my old Intellivision now and then - fun system, but never has a controller been built that was more brutal to the thumbs!
