I've generally found that newer RPGs tend to be better (not that some don't fail)... mostly because they have higher production value, but there are a few gems from the olden days of gaming. I think the SNES is the best by far in this category. Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, and the SNES FFs are all well recieved, and I like most of those games to a degree. There are a lot of gems for the SNES that weren't released in the US, too.
Genesis has a few RPGs, most notably Phantasy Star and Shining Force games. I played SF2 and much of PSIV recently... and have found them both pretty mediocre. I don't think the Genesis had the same capacity as the SNES for awesomeness (especially in the sound department. Ugh.)
I don't think I've played any RPGs for the NES unless you count the original LoZ. I know there aren't many aside from old FF and DQ games, but I'm sure there are a few others that might be interesting.
But my favorite game from those days (though I played the PSX version) is easily Chrono Trigger. There's something about the happy atmosphere and the vibrant colors and the catchy music that pleases me.
What are some other, more elusive RPGs from this era that you have played and liked? What are your favorite RPGs from this era in general? General discussion on all your old school RPG needs is here!
I reserve the right to be entirely wrong.

I'm kinda on the lookout for some really good SNES RPG's as I just picked up an SNES on EBay....Zelda: A link To The Past came with it, so I know I'm gonna enjoy that....I would try to get Chrono Trigger, but it's pretty pricey. Secret Of Evermore is on my list to get....that looks like a pretty good RPG, and it's not too expensive.
Legend Of Zelda is probably the best RPG of this era though....
Old school NES RPG's? Wizardry sticks out in my mind. The graphics are terrible. The sound is terrible. It's easy to get lost in the catacombs since there's no map, you have to map it on graph paper or go by memory which is difficult due to random teleporters, pits, one-way doors, etc. The game saves after every battle so if your whole party dies in combat, you either have to reset the system VERY quickly or create a new party to go in and find the corpses of your previous party to resurrect (which has a chance to fail, two failures to rez in a row permanently deletes the character). Great class options for it's time however, you can change and upgrade your characters' classes as the game goes by; characters also get older as the game progresses and can actually die of old age. Definately worth checking out if you're into old-school rpgs, although the vast majority of people will be turned off by the appearance and difficulty of it.
If you're looking for SNES RPG's try Lufia 2 Rise of the Sinistrals. It has lots of side stuff in it, which I personaly like, and it's also a very similar style of game to FFVI, but without as strong a storyline, although still lots of fun. It's actually the prequel to Lufia & The Fortress of Doom which is also an RPG on SNES, you might wanna try that one out too.
There is also Secret of Mana 1 and 2, otherwise known as Seiken Densetsu 2 and 3, which are also a great games.
Some people may consider newer RPG's to be better for whatever reasons, but I personally prefer older RPG's, in fact, I still to this day choose to play many older RPG's over playing newer ones, especially SNES titles. One could argue that the older titles boast the nostalgia factor which is a good point, but I played FFVI and FFVIII (which were both PS titles) long before I played FFVI (which was a SNES title), and FFVI is definitely one of if not my favourite RPG's.
I've found once I get into the game and it's dynamics I don't even register the graphics, I just seem to except the game as it is and enjoy it.

Oooh, that is a great game. Lufia 2 was one of my favorite games when I was younger. Great, easy-going game. It's got that feel good atmosphere that the Suikoden series seems to keep as well. It's by no means as good as FFVI, but it's worth playing.

The best time period for RPG's was the last half of the SNES and the first half of the PS1. There were so many great games coming out in that period between '94 and '98.
