Playstation had some good RPGs to share with playstation fans. Of course we all know of the final fantasy games, but what about the games that never got recognized? One game that I've played recently is Legend of Dragoon. This game is tons of fun and was never really recognized. Yes it is a rip-off on final fantasy, but who cares :? What are some other great "unknown" RPGs for the playstation?

Definitely Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals for the SNES.

Lufia 2 is set in some sort of mixed fantasy, middle age, early modern era, whatever that is? The story may be lacking a bit of depth; I won't ruin it for you, but regardless, the characters were still enjoyable, and never annoying from memory.

You set off on a solo adventure until you’re slowly accompanied by more people and then pretty soon you’ve got yourself a party. You later get a sea ship, later which can be turned into an air ship/blimp, and then also a submarine (there’s a whole other world under water to explore.) Lufia 2 is abundant with adventure; it’s a fairly long game for a JRPG; just when you think it’s over, it keeps on going.

Lufia 2 is also loaded with side quests and mini games. Stuff that comes to memory:

There’s a games island with a casino where you can play a few different card games, and win some really lethal weapons. There’s also a shop on that games island where you can purchase anything you’ve ever sold in the game.

There’s an optional dungeon that has a 100 floors (really freaking hard from memory.)

There’s an egg hunting quest that allows you to have 1 wish granted by a dragon once you’ve collected all the dragons’ eggs using this sonar device… Very Dragonball-esque now that I think about it!

There are about 8 of these Pet Monsters all around the world that you collect during your adventures. They fight by your side in battle and have the ability to evolve and thus become stronger. Some of them are lethal and offer real aid in battle. Note this game was released long before Pokemon.

The dungeons are nicely balanced in Lufia 2, full of many different puzzles and foes that make for both action packed and mentally challenging game play, but with the advantage that all the foes are physically visible and need to be physically encountered in order to enter into a battle with them, so they can often (but not always) be avoided if you just want to get through the dungeon. However, if you want to power level, random encounters occur on the world map.

If you’re someone who is able to get past the old SNES graphics, and you’re into that whole generation of RPG’s, I’d definitely recommend you give Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals a go.

As for best underrated RPG, it's hard to pick. Most RPGs get really good reviews. Even though it's become a cult classic, I'd still have to pick Earthbound, if I haven't posted that already. Truly a game that stands out among the rest, even today.

As long as we are expanding this from the TC's limitations of PS1 RPG's, I will say Shadows Over Riva for the PC. Shitty-ass graphics (even for it's time), but a surprisingly good story, and deep customization and combat. Great game.

Good to see some love for Lufia 2. I'm still praying that we'll see a real sequel someday; the Game Boy one was kind of bland and The Ruins of Lore sucked pretty hard.

I always thought the first SaGa Frontier was tremendously underrated. Seems like most people either love it or hate it, and I thought it was brilliant, though I will admit that earning money is practically impossible. I've played that game an awful lot but I always end up using various cheats to get some gold. SaGa Frontier 2 was a disappointment and I haven't heard anything good about Unlimited Saga.

Considering how much Square likes to milk its franchises, I'm surprised they haven't released the SNES SaGa games over here...none of them have adequate fan translations.

While I'm on Square, I might as well mention Parasite Eve 2 - it's barely an RPG, but the hatred people have for this game astonishes me.

I have to go with Phantasy Star IV on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive!

Great RPG with different/crossing over story lines, great characters and a long but satisfying story!

I own it on the Genesis but recently bought the Genesis collection for my PSP and it has not only IV but II and III on it aswell!

The fan translation for Mother 3, the sequel to Earthbound (Mother 2 in Japan), has been released. You can find it here, along with the information you'll need to get it going on your PC: http://mother3.fobby.net/ (mods - they just host the patch itself, not the ROM, so nothing illegal)

I've played it for a few hours today and it's pretty freaking awesome; the gameplay is for the most part the same but smoothed out a bit, but the story so far is looking much more involved than Earthbound was. And of course the same sense of humor and attention to detail is in the dialog. Really, if you loved Earthbound you have to try this...it fulfills all of my expectations and more. Such a shame that Nintendo is apparently never going to give it an official release outside Japan.

Would Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete for PS1 be considered underrated? I loved that rpg and its sequel Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, but it seems that these may have been more quickly forgotten than underrated. Lunar: Silver Star Story first showed up on the Saturn if I'm not mistaken.

Really? That had to be one of the most boring in my opinion. I have to agree with shed though, except it's more like all of the lufia titles are underrated not just 2.

Shamfully, I started playing Lufia 1, but never really got into it. I haven't played any of the others.

I'm with odysseyandoracle, somebody should do a remake!
