I doubt it. Goldeneye wasn't just fun to play, it had a mystique about it. When playing it, you felt as though there was something more than just a game to play, it really was a different world. Today most game designers are only about money, so they take the same games and give them different plots but with the same gameplay knowing that people will still buy them. And, the faster they churn them out, with the least expense, the more money they will make. Unfortunately, its hard to make companies focus on GREAT QUALITY, instead of quantity these days and into the future, so I don't believe there will every be anything as groundbreaking and perfect as Goldeneye. Just look at Goldeneye: Rogue Agent. A perfect example of a company churning out a game to ride on the name of Goldeneye. And what a POS!! Rogue Agent was. Games as good as Goldeneye are a dead breed, not because they aren't worth it, but because no company has the balls to focus on legacy instead of money, quality instead of quantity.
One final thing, for any designers out there who want to make money but their consciences are leaning them towards quality games, I'd be MORE than happy to pay $100, $200, screw it $300 for a game as good as Goldeneye for a current gen console. Just so you know.
Oh yeah, Half-Life beats the shiza out of HALO, and Goldeneye beats Half-life by its special aura that preceded HL. HL was groundbreaking, Goldeneye was groundbreaking, HALO held its own but to me was just a high budget, high interest, Über hyped game that could do more only because it wasn't crammed into a 64 bit game console cartridge, but poured into a DVD, which helped a lot. Not to mention, my first impression of HALO was "HL knock-off with a 'different plot'." That impression still stands strong, however HALO is a perfect example of quality that game companies CAN achieve these days, but choose not to. Also, I'm going to say one more thing, putting it at the end hoping most won't read this far. HL2 was great, but not as great as it could have been. There, I said it. Also, after hearing about Kingdom Hearts being a great game for so long from so many semi to highly reliable sources, including IGN.com, 1up.com, Metacritic, a bunch of friends and acquantances, and so forth I'm going to have to say that they're all insane. The game was awful, I forced myself to play it for four hours telling myself "it has to get better," and "it'll surprise me any second now." But like watching "Be Cool" or "Garden State," that hope was quickly and mercilessly decimated.

Several people have said that they feel Perfect Dark is better than Goldeneye, but I simply must disagree. Now don't get me wrong, Perfect Dark is amazing. Unarguably one of the best. Indeed, it trounces Goldeneye in almost every aspect. However, the aiming sensitivity in Perfect Dark is much more loose than it is in Goldeneye and that always drove me crazy! Getting headshots in Perfect Dark is exponentially harder than in Goldeneye. Perhaps this is the result of becoming just unchangably accustomed to Goldeneye's controls, but it is very frustrating at times. Has any one else noticed this?
For me Goldeneye is tops when it comes to multiplayer action. The proximity mines were my all time favorite weapon. I haven't played the game since my brother & I were roomates (the N64 was his), so I don't remember the name of the stage we always played in. (I think it was the Temple.) All four of us would place these flippin' mines EVERYWHERE & before too long... BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! We were gettin' blown up every couple of steps! The best trap was when you snuck up on someone from above & just started dropping those suckers all around them!
I've played Halo & a few other FPS's but, I've never had as good a time as when we all blew the livin' sh*t outta each other in Goldeneye.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are the two greatest FPS's ever. I prefer Perfect Dark, if only for the multiplayer which allows one shot kills. Halo & Halo 2 are the vomiting of a sick dog and have none of the features or level design wonders that the Rare boys played with.

Haven't you ever heard of the GOLDEN GUN in Goldeneye? It was a one-shot kill weapon & I hated when we picked that gun as weapon of coice because those filthy turds would get me EVERYTIME!

Oh the Golden Gun was terrific, but PD as we affectionately called it had one shot kills as a generally applicable setting and that just made the games soooo much more exciting and fast. There was a group of us, 4 in fact, and we would order pizza, get some coke and chocolate and play Goldeneye and PD all night. The level design in Goldeneye is the best ever I would argue. Each level so different, and so immersive. I just have to close my eyes and I can walk the entire 1st level in my head!

Multiplayer on Goldeneye with the Golden Gun in place! Some of the most intense multiplayer gaming moments ever created. Of all the stuff I've played since then nothing comes close to this. I didn't mention it initially but this might have been the main reason for me making this thread in the first place.

Yep, I own a copy of Goldeneye on the N64 aswell as the original Perfect Dark, which was very similar but set slightly in the future. I agree that it has been one of the best FPS games for a long time but the multiplayer was limited to only 4 players, on 1 screen as there was no system link N64 option or online play, which is why games such as Halo (Halo 3 Should be AWESOME) do surpass the multiplayer as system link and online xbox live are available to gamers, as well as vehicles and awesome graphics. I think if it was remade with larger multiplayer features and next generation graphics not many FPS's could surpass it.

Isn't Doom a FPS? I'd like to think that it should get atleast an honorable mention. The topic question is kind of vague. Surpassed by what? Another FPS? A better 64 game? A better Bond game?

Such a great game. Man I don't know how many hours I spent unlocking all the cheats... and then when I FINALLY get invincibility my friend goes and loses the catridge!!!

Goldeneye had one shot kills in multilayer? :P
Goldeneye was pure brilliance.

Originally posted by Media_geek2.0: Goldeneye is a superb game, but others have surpassed it. It was only one year later when another FPS came out which was far better, and that game was Half-life. Besides, others such as Halo have outdone Goldeneye already, mostly due to better multiplayer.
Goldeneye has NOT been surpassed for the simple fact that if you can have the same ammount of fun playing either Halo or Goldeneye, then Goldeneye is still on top, as it has been all these years. the biggest factor that stands out in goldeneye was the over the top violence that the game included since it was primarily about james bond. the multiplayer was insane from the fact that you could play as almost 80 different characters (or more, i cant remember) the levels, playing modes, and weapon choices fro each level added alot of customization to the game as well. of course there are games that have "surpassed" goldeneye in terms of graphics, sound quality, AI, and multiplayer. But goldeneye still has it where it counts with the gameplay.
just waiting for the dream to end....and the nightmare to commence.

Goldeneye is the quintessential FPS. Goldeneye is the original. You can add all the extra features and crazy graphics you want but all it is is Goldeneye with plastic surgery
