I'm sure I'll get redirected if there is already a thread, but I didn't see any discussion for "The Departed." Two questions, for those who have seen it.
Whose baby is it?
Why doesn Dignam kill Colin at the end? Is it personal vendetta, police business, or is Dignam working for Frank?

Pretty sure Dignam doesn't arrest Sullivan, because, as Sullivan points out, they didn't have enough evidence to convict him. Unless the material that Costigan gives to Madolyn ultimately gets to Dignam. If it did, wouldn't that be enough to convict Sullivan? If she didn't give Dignam the evidence, how does he know that Sullivan is the mole?
I think it was a kill or be killed situation, no witnesses or evidence would survive to make it to trial.

Here's what i think: I think the envelope contained the number to reach dignam about sullivan's being a rat, such that when Costigan died, justice would still be served, and I think it is Dignam killing Sullivan at the end.
I also wondered what was in that envelope that Costigan gave to Madelyn, for her and only her to keep and to open two weeks later or something? I wish they developed that more, give the girl a bigger role.

I agree that Dignam took it out on himself to take revenge on Colin. He was awesome in that movie.
Also, what about the guy that Colin stabbed in the alleyway chase. He must of died, but if he didn't...and also on the same scene, it's shown that he was caught on camera getting chased by Costagan. Later though it shows him going through the tapes. He must of gone back and got the tapes? Idk, I thought that was fishy about a week after I saw in the theaters.

I agree that those would be the obvious answers, but why does Scorsese go to the trouble of pointing out Sullivan's impotence? Madolyn doesn't become pregnant until some time after she sleeps with Billy Costigan. Why is she so upset at Costigan's funeral, and cutting ties off with Sullivan so completely, if she's carrying Sullivan's baby.

Somewhat confusing, I think.

I'd guess it's Sullivan's kid. Also, I think Dignam is a straight-arrow cop who found out the truth and took matters into his own hands. If it were police business, he would have arrested Colin.
