My daughter adored the film. I think she really identified with Marie. Of course, she's nine, so the idea of cavorting in your pretend village with cute fluffy animals seems like a great idea to her. When a 27 to 30 year old woman is doing it, I think it's a bit grotesque.
I think Sophia Coppolla (and Antonia Fraser) were overly kind and polite to Marie. It's true she was young and likely sheltered when she arrived at the court, and, yes, there were mean girls there, but none of it takes away from the fact that the real Marie appears to have been vapid, shallow and disconnected.
I loved the soundtrack and the photography, and I think SC did a great job of showing the bustle, activity, and lack of privacy of Louis' court. But, lionizing Marie Antoinette? Really!

My basic objection to religion is not that it isn't true; I like plenty of things that aren't true. It's that religion grants its adherents malign, intoxicating and morally corrosive sensations. -Philip Pullman
