One of the reasons I liked this movie so much was that I didn't really have to be distracted by the "what is going on?" theme that this movie basically offers. I figured out most of the plot by the half way point, though much of the important elements were becoming apparent earlier on in the movie. With that being the case, I was able to enjoy this movie from the view point of Wil Smith's character not from the standpoint of an audience member.
That being said, a more fundamental theatrical issue was the screen writer's use of the mysterious motivation and behavior. I was able to empathize in a much more deep way when I understood what was happening than if I had to relate to this movie as a mystery movie (murder/suicide/mystery) which I now believe took away from the movie for most audience members. It's possible that this movie fails not so much with the integrity of Wil Smith's acting and behavior and major plot points as much by the unnecessary mystery surrounding the whole context in which the events were taking place.
