SHOPGIRL opened to widely mixed reviews, perhaps a sign of an uncertain and confused movie or a potent and powerful sign that it was a movie that defied tradition and in reality was an important and great movie for those who could appreciate it. Personally, I am rooting for the later. This LOST IN TRANSLATION (2003) stylistic version of relationships as opposed to the original cultural travelogue that TRANSLATION offered its viewers, has SHOPGIRL, adapted for the screen by Steve Martin of his own novella presents a subdued but subtle and layered examination of the reflective intelligence that Mr. Martin has gleened of being human and the authentic universe of being in relationships.
