One of the most amazing cinematic experiences in years, this romantic drama period piece expertly taps into the wonderful world of theatrical film making to bring a whole new large screen experience to movie-goers all over the world. With an innovative creative emphasis on sound effects, excellent set designs, and a background that focuses on a textured, layered background, the actors are allowed to reach level of performances that perfectly capture the movie experience and sensibility rarely brought to the screen. The rigid class structure of British society, an unusual intelligent but rather difficult young girl, a fabulous play on different perspectives of different character's experiences of the same events make for a truly amazing theatrical sensation. Easly my top movie of the past decade.

I thought the score was excellent, actually.

Plus that tracking shot in Dunkirk was fantastic.

All in all it was a pretty good movie in my eyes, but No Country for Old Men would be better for Best Picture.

While I can understand your thinking on this, I am one of the few in the minority who feel that No Country for Old Men is highly overrated. I have a large list of problems with the movie so it's almost impossible not to promote Atonement as best movie of the year, hands down.

By far, one of the best films I have seen all year. An obvious Best Picture nominee.

A backward thread!! this is so cool. Big Grin

Atonement clearly needed more temporal jiggery-pokery, like this wacky thread.

I have some expectations that Joe Wright will make a very fine film one day, without having seen his P& P; but apart from the library seduction scene, Atonement ain't it.

Hey, Ishy, this is one of those weird threads where everything gets posted backwards. I haven't seen Atonement, but I certainly enjoyed Joe Wright's muscular adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. I don't recall if tabuno even saw that one because all I can remember is him talking aout the TV Mini-Series, which I, of course, bought for my wife.

I saw the theatrical movie version of Pride and Prejudice directed by Joe Wright. I didn't like his version as much as the television miniseries. However, I really don't know if it really was Joe Wright's directing as much as the need for extensive editing, cutting to fit the much reduced length of a theatrical release (127 minutes) which really eliminated much of what made the television miniseries so special that clocked in at more than 300 minutes.

hey there tabuno. Your point about being prejudiced is fair to a point.
My dislike of the novel was never actually going to colour my viewing of the film. Indeed I was full of hope that the film would transform the book, much in the same way that I find Tolkien's books dull and laboured but absolutely adore the films.
Too bad for me I guess!

Did you happen to like the director's previous costume drama?

I shall provide a contrary view to tabuno.

Dull, laboured, lacking narrative drive and only intermittently well-acted, I found it a great struggle to remain involved.
The soundtrack I found manipulative and cliched.
Nice photography though.

I didn't like the book either, so there ya go.

I have found that if one goes into a movie already not liking the premise or concept as you imply with your reference to not liking the book, than it may be that it's not so much that the movie isn't technical bad, it is that you selectively already knew that it was bad in your mind, therefore of course it would be dull and a struggle to remain in involved. I went into the movie without having read the book, having been intrigued by the trailers, feeling that this would be a good movie.
