I looked for a similiar thread but found none, I hope this is the right spot for this topic.

I've picked up a few magnificent, awe-inspiring comps over the years of psych, folk, beat, rock,
instrumental and other styles from Turkey. Usually these are songs from mid 1960s to mid-late 1970s.

My top three favorite comps of such music are:

Hava Narghile (Dionysus / Bacchus Archives)
Turkish Delights (Grey Past)
Love, Peace & Poetry: Turkish Psychedelic Music (Shadoks)

Turkish Delights is currently out-of-print but the other two albums are pretty easy to come by. Aquarius, Bomp, Other Music and Forced Exposure are a few online shops that offer these cds.

Some of my favorite Turkish psych/folk artists include Mogollar, 3 Hur-el, Erkin Koray, Edip Akbayram, and Bulent. A great site to read up on and find samples/downloads of these artists is at Turkish psych-folk encyclopedia.

My recent renewed interest in this music came after I bought a copy of Selda's 1976 Vurulduk Ey Halkim Unutma Bizi album from Dusty Groove. This is a totally fantastic amazing album, I was floored. I love the Middle Eastern groove meshed with a psych beat to her gorgeous pipes with a nice folky feel. Dusty Groove recently added a handful of Turkish titles to their stock, so there's another great place to hunt down this exciting music.

I moved this to World Music, but I doubt it'll get any more uptake here than it did in rock.

I didn't even know there was a flourishing subgenre of Turkish psychedlic folk! I don't get much past Nuggets...

Turkish psychedelic folk you say? Now that's certainly far more interesting than the latest snot-nosed indie sensation clogging up the board.

Preach on my strange and exotic friend. Cool

How did you get into this scene?

Is this music political?

Is it what I think it might be; eerie, souk-y, smoke-filled snake charmery with erotic and melancholy female lamentations over the top? If so, I want it, and I want it now.

...I have been reported missing, last seen heading to check out your link... Smiler

I think Hava Narghile was recommended as a Turkish version of Nuggets. So for those who liked Nuggets and like non-English psych-folk, here you go.

If memory serves, it was Suzy Shaw from Bomp records who recommend the comp above which brought me into the far-out world of Turkish psych, folk, prog and beat music. I was immediately hooked to the MidEastern beat mixing in with European psych and prog and often US/UK folk. I also know the fellow who wrote the liner notes on the Love Peace & Poetry set. That guy is a library of knowledge on things psychedelic, er musically speaking. Speaking of the Love Peace & Poetry comp, there are also editions available on psychedelic music from the US, UK, Mexico and South America. All these albums are amazing, miss them at your own risk.

Political? Selda was a protest singer, her album of political based songs was banned at the time (early 1970s). She was denied a visa to travel outside Turkey to perform. I have to admit she has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. I'm on the look-out for more of her reissues.

Good hunting at the link, hope you find some sounds you like.

If you have time to explore, check out Turkish psych-folk encyclopedia part one. Look under the musicians A-K and L-Z for samples and downloads, though not all links may work. Mogollar, 3 Hur-el, Erkin Koray and Selda are good artists to begin with. Love, Peace & Poetry- Turkish Psychedelic Music is an excellent collection of Turkish psych-folk that's still available, amazon has it in stock. Erkin Koray is probably the most popular Turkish artist with Western fans. Myself, I prefer Selda (sometimes listed as Selda Bagcan) who has one of the most gorgeous voices I've ever heard. Can't understand a word she sings but my God how she sings! There are two cd reissues of her albums available now, again at amazon and also at Dusty Groove. Hope you find some good Turkish sounds you like, rockthief.
