Has anyone here checked out the Sublime Frequencies label run by the guy from Sun City Girls? They specialize in radio recordings all over the world. My favorite so far is Radio Morocco, but I ordered Radio Thailand today and I'm pretty excited for that too.

Thoughts?

Well, my reply may seem out of date, but as a Sun City Girl's and Alan Bishop's fan, I checked the Sublime Frequencies label and bought several of the records they edit, and in my opinion they are great.

The blend of Asian traditionnal music and pop-rock Western sounds thrilled me from toes to head.

I recommend the following ones :

Guitars of the Golden Triangle
Folk and Pop Souns of Sumatra vol. 2
Molam - Country Groove from Isan

Well, I guess I am now to explore Turkish psych-folk music, as mentionned in another thread of this forum. Razzer

One of the most exciting things I've heard all year is :-

Folk and Pop Music of Myanmar vol.3 : Music of Nat Pwe

This stuff is really wild psychedelic speed gamelan for transvestite ghost brides. Smiler

Just ordered a new one on Sublime Frequencies- Latinamericarpet- Exploring The Vinyl Warp Of Latin American Psychedelia Vol 1. The samples I heard so far are pretty far out.

The Proibidao CV- Forbidden Gang Funk From Rio De Janeiro collection is also funky and intense. Definitely not for everyone but very different and worthwhile if you're up to a listening challenge.

hehe - yeah!

Another couple ones I've been enjoying lately and should purchase when my queue/funds ratio is better are:

Princess Nicotine (Folk and Pop Music of Myanmar vol. 1)

Night Recordings From Bali - This includes lots of gamelan, some field recordings {including one of a cremation procession?!} along with some crazy ketchak stuff. Yeah, I've heard that ketchak (Kecak, according to Wiki) was pretty much invented to bring in some tourism $$, but I don't see why that should stop me from enjoying it. Wink
