Anyone else here digging this new anthology? I hadn't heard much Tropicalia before listening to the new Soul Jazz compilation that was recently released. What I had heard were a few Os Mutantes and Gilberto Gil songs as well as the German comp Love, Peace & Poetry- Brazilian Psychedelic Music which featured music from the Tropicalia and post-Tropicalia years.

The Soul Jazz album is a great introduction to this amazing music from late 60s Brazil. Besides Os Mutantes and Gilberto Gil, the line-up also includes Tom Ze, Gal Costa, and Caetano Veloso. I'm wanting to hear more of the Mutantes and Gal Costa as well as the more obscure artists in this genre.

finally got my copy of this. I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but if the packaging is any indication, this is going to be a nice compilation.

I got it yesterday and I've only listened to it once, but it's pretty amazing.

I'll have to keep my eye out for it. It looks like a hard one to find.

I found two albums by a couple artists on this comp. The songs I like best from Everything Is Possible: The Best of Os Mutantes are on the Trop comp, the remaining songs are good though I'm thinking there are more worthy songs on the group's individual releases. Also bought a copy of Gal Costa's 1970 Legal album and was wowed by this one. It's post-Tropicalia though still has that sound in several songs. This is a pretty diverse sounding record, I hear R&B, showtunes, bossa nova, blues and even psychedelia. I'm now hunting down two other recommended Costa albums '69s Gal Costa and from '73 Índia.

Still highly recommend the Tropicalia comp to anyone and everyone.

I'd highly recommend the first Caetano Veloso album "Tropicalia" (1968), it is first rate throughout. I think it is out of print in the US but I found a new Brazilian import copy just the other day for regular price ($13.99). I'd also recommend the David Byrne / Luaka Bop compilation "Brazil Classics 4: The Best Of Tom Zé" - it contains almost all of his classic "Estudando O Samba".

Well, tropicalia is its own genre. For Americans, Beck did the cool song "Tropicalia" on his brilliant Mutations album.

Nope, haven't heard any of her solo albums. As I'm getting into another Brazilian mood, thanks for the heads up on this one.

I picked up a great Brazilian collection recently, Soul Jazz Records Presents Brazil 70: After Tropicalia New Directions In Brazilian Music In The 70s. It's more funk and rock based but still has the distinctive Tropicalia beats, and performed by most of the artists on the other Tropicalia comps. Very highly recommended.
