Will "The Passion" get nominated even though the Academy is largely Jewish? It is after all a phenomenal acheivment for Mel Gibson to make such an intimate film that gains so much money. Will "Farenheit 9/11" be nominated for Best Picture because it was (wrongly) snubbed out of the Documentary race? Will voters (apologies for the phrase) "get" the brainy comedic adventures "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" or "I Heart Huckabees" ? Will there be nominations for the smaller films of the year: "Maria Full of Grace", "Tarnation", "Sideways". Or will well-made blockbusters sweep the Academy like "Spider Man 2" and "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"? What about the holiday movies to come: "The Aviator", "Proof", "Spanglish", "The Long Engagement"? If you think it's too early for predictions maybe you're just distraught by the lack of a clear standout GREAT film this year. After all, 2005 is just a few months away...

I dont think any blockbusters as spiderman and harry potter will get nominated for best picture. It is possible that the largest blockbuster of the year, shrek 2 will get nominated for best animated feature. For the future, the aviator and ray look like they might get some attention. So far, eternal sunshine i think will win it. I pretty positive that f 911 wont get nominated for best picture. Ummm, what has been good, i cant think of any others at the moment.

My predictions are:

Best Picture:

- Ray
- Eternal Sunshine
- The Aviator
- Manchurian Candidate
- Kill Bill vol. 2 (I hope)

not Fahrenheit 911. What do you mean it was snubbed out of the best documentar race??? It should win best doc for sure.

Best Actor:

- Jim Carrey (ETOTSM)
- Jamie Foxx (Ray)
- Leo Dicaprio (Aviator)
- Jim Caviezal?? (Passion of the Christ)

Best Actress:

- Kate Winslet (ETOTSM)
- Meryl Streep (Manchurian Candidate)
- Uma Thurman (Kill Bill vol. 2)

I think Eternal Sunshine will take Original Screenplay for sure, I dont know about adapted.

Although the movie wasnt that good, Im pretty sure Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow should have no trouble winning Best F/X.

Its gonna be Shrek 2 vs. The Incredibles for Best Animated.

I wont go into anything else.

It's a little too early to predict Oscar nominations, as most of the best films come out in December. I thought that "The Road to Perdition" was one of the best films in 2002, but it was totally overlooked by everything that came out later that year.

At this point in time, I sure hope that "Eternal..." gets a ton of nominations, but I do think being released so early in the year will hurt it. Also, for some reason, The Golden Globes love Jim Carrey, but Oscar hates him. Witness what happened with "Truman Show", one of the best pictures of the 90's (IMHO).

As for "The Passion of the Christ", I thought it was a really good picture, and, I should add that I'm Jewish, and did not find it to be anti-semitic. This film clearly evokes strong feelings on both sides, and I respect people who ACTUALLY SAW the film and didn't like it (although I disagree with them).

Unfortunately, I don't think "The Passion..." will receive any major nominations, although I think that it should. Not only is it controversial, but it's also a conservative interpretation of religion. And most of the people who vote for Oscar are liberals. That's the main reason why this won't get any major nominations. If it was controversial with a liberal interpretation of religion, it'd be much more likely to be receiving nominations.

I hope I'm wrong by the way...I'd love to see it get some major nominations, not just for Best Cinematography and Art Direction.

Yeah, Micheal Moore planned on releasing "F 9/11" on Pay-Per-View the night before the election which violates the Academy's rule about releasing a possible nominee on PPV so early (something like that) thus eliminating him from Best Doc race. Well, his special got cancelled by Time-Warner (conservative @ssholes) so Im not sure if this re-qualifies him for the award or not...

Umm yeah....DUH!! "The Passion" WAS NOT MADE FOR YOU. It was made for christians and those of us who hold religion close to their heart. That's why a film like "The Passion" doesnt suit itself to reviews for it's made for a niche audience. Some will love it and some will ahte it. BUT those who hate it should justify that they do not hate because it is a poorly made film they hate it because it is a movie that is not targeted towards them.

This has nothing to do with your actual discussion. I don't consider myself religious, but I believe everyone should consider spirituality as a possible explanation for things here which seemingly have no rational explanation through the five senses. I'm not advocating anything quacky, anti-intellectual, or cultish. But if YOU believe that science cannot explain everything about this world, then an attempt at something personal to try to learn why that is, would have to be something logical for any aware human being.

As far as films go, I've never separated films into categories where they "are not for somebody." All films have to stand up against all others. Being a "fringe" or "niche" film doesn't disqualify something from passing some basic standards of quality or entertainment (the latter is a word which I have never found "dirty".)

Personally, I found "Passion" to be a well-made, albeit unique, film. Everyone has a right to dislike it for whatever reasons. When I say that I like it, I don't think it's because I'm a robot. I DON'T go to church. Organized religion seems to be a bane to our world, much like politics and money. I do know the story, but if I found the film boring or poorly-made, I'd be the first to say so. I didn't find it as good as "Braveheart", but it was amazing how similar much of the filmmaking and themes were. Well, maybe it wasn't so amazing. Mel Gibson obviously injected his personal feelings onto two stories he related to.

Shut up, mark.

I don't know about predictions, but here's who SHOULD win:

Picture:
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind OR Vera Drake (I liked Dogville the most out of any film this year, but it won't be nominated for anything)

Director:
I really don't know. There have been so many wonderfully directed movies this year. I would, of course, love to see Von Trier win, but he won't, so I guess Gondry, Payne, or Leigh would be alright.

Actor:
Paul Giamatti in Sideways.

Actress:
Imelda Staunton in Vera Drake (who will probably win) OR Laura Dern in We Don't Live Here Anymore

Supp. Actor:
I don't really know... Haden Church in Sideways? Ruffalo in We Don't Live Here Anymore?

Supp. Actress:
Virginia Madsen in Sideways. A shoo-in, I think.

And for Best Doc:
Tarnation... Fahrenheit 9/11 was exploitative and offensive, no matter what party you affiliate yourself with. I'm so glad it can't be nominated for this.

i guess that's it!

They just put out the 12 finalists for "Best Documentary Feature" and "Tarnation" wasn't included.

The list is:

"Riding Giants" (which at least RayRay, my wife and I have seen)
"Super Size Me"
"Tupac Resurrection"
"Touching the Void"
"Born Into Brothels"
"Home of the Brave"
"Howard Zinn: You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train"
"In the Realms of the Unreal"
"The Ritchie Boys"
"The Story of the Weeping Camel"
"Tell Them Who You Are"
"Twist of Faith"

Five of those will be nominated. Nominations will be announced Jan. 25, and the awards given Feb. 27.

you know what? I'd almost rather see Shark Tales than The Polar Express on the Best Animated list...however I'm sure you are right. Oh and Kraftdeluxe, how about Naomi Watts for best supporting actress in The Assassination of Richard Nixon?

Sideways will win Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture. Kate Winslet will (should) win Best Actress. The guy from Sideways should win Best Actor. Eternal Sunshine will win Best Original Screenplay. Sideways will win for Best Score. Sideways will win for directing...I have no idea for supporting actor/ress...I guess that "Closer" movie has good acting...

I disagree. Million Dollar Baby has a good shot at Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. That film is phenomenal. Best movie of that type since Sling Blade.

I'm really hoping that "Garden State" will get a Best Picture nomination, but I doubt it. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is a far more obvious choice. Natalie Portman may get a Best (Supporting?) Actress nomination, but it will most likely be for "Closer" (which I haven't seen).

The Incredibles will take Best Animated Feature, without a doubt.

But wasn't "Sideways" an original screenplay? It won the Best Original Screenplay Golden Globe...???

The Globes only have one screenplay category; they don't differentiate. "Sideways" (Adapted) and "ETSOTSM" (Original) can both win screenplay Oscars in different categories.

I'm sorry krafty, I was trying to quote you and respond in my own post, but I accidentally edited your post and didn't quote it. SORRY, that was a mistake, and somehow I didn't double check! Now I can't fix it, I'm afraid.

Wow - what a list of nominees. Totally surprised Paul Giamantti got snubbed and that Supersize Me got a nod over Touching the Void. SSM was awful IMO - so shallow compared to TV.

YUCK...blech. What a godawful list of nominees!! I must say that they are (mostly) all good films but suuuch predictable choices!! I drown in my own dissapointment! This year could have been such a fun year in terms of Oscars but the Academy chose to be blase and, hell, I might only tune in to see if Chris Rock does something cool though I doubt he will...damn FCC! Maria Full of Grace deserves more than just an acting nod as does "ESOTM" and "Kill Bill Vol. 2". What ever happened to "Farhenheit" or "The Passion" werent they supposed to get some credit?! I heard "Kinsey" and "Hotel Rwanda" were both phenomenal. What do you think Academy? "The Aviator" will sweep the nominations this year though I'd really like it if "Ray" won---even if it wasnt the better film.
