Let's see if we can keep this going all season. Any thoughts on the first episode of season 3? It looks like we have moved on the the third group on the island: season 1 was the front of the plane, season 2 we met the rear, and now the "others." I'm interested to learn their story.

I wonder if we're going to start seeing backstories on the others.
I'm eager to see how that pans out. It seems like one of the big appeals of Lost is the mystery. Once the audience gets to know the enemy, the mystery is gone.

Maybe, but it may turn out the others aren't the enemy we have come to regard them as. So far, it looks like their existence pre plane crash was pretty mundane. Bookclub? But they do seem to know an awful lot about the survivors. It seemed to me though that the plane crash took them by surprise, whereas last season it seemed to be suggested it was all planned. Maybe there's a higher power than the others.

That's kind of what I suspect. It'll turn out that there's some bigger threat on the island, and they'll end up working together.
That's what happened on J.J. Abrams' other series, Alias. After spending a couple seasons as the defacto bad guy, they had Arvin Sloane working with the CIA.

Has anything become clearer for anyone? I'm still really interested in finding out who the others are, especially since the head guy told Jack he has lived on the island his whole life. I'm also interested in finding out how they are so well connected.

I found the last episode a bit dull. The only interesting piece of info I got out of it was when the one other chick told Sun that they weren't the real enemy, as we suspected.

You're right. For sheer excitement, this one was a bit blah, but it looks like next week's episode might be good. Every little bit we learn about the others intrigues me though.

I tried watching one episode last season, but...nothing made sense. So it's obvious if I'm going to get into Lost, I have to start from the start.
So, I'm going to rent the DVD. My question is...how long will I have to go before I know if I like it? Is it immediately interesting on the first episode, or does it take a little while to steam up? (In other words, how long should I give it?)
Well, it's a serial drama, and it takes awhile for the story to develop, so if you're looking for a show with immediate gratification, it's probably not for you. It's a mystery, and every episode usually provides more questions than answers. So, you're going to give it more than one episode. I think it took me until about the 4th episode of the first season before I was really hooked.

I said the fourth episode, because the last scene (which shows what happens to Locke after the plane crash) is still one of my favorite moments from the show. But overall, yeah, the second half of the first season is where things really start to unravel. The second season is stellar all the way through.

I'm liking it enough to at least give it till the end of the season.
It seems like the kind of show where the fun is not knowing what the hell is going on. Which implies to me that the payoff will be what makes or breaks it. (Which also makes me understand all the Twin Peaks comparisons).
It's strange...it took me about half an hour to make the connection between Charlie and Lord of the Rings.
Then again, it took me several episodes to make the connection between Lynn on 24 and Lord of the Rings. Something to do with the height modification.
Ok, as the first part of the season is winding down, nothing but questions remain. First and foremost, who's that new hot blonde?! Ok, ok, seriously, what the hell is that black smoke? Also who is the man with the patch? He looked more military than "otherly." I'm pretty bummed if Ecko is really dead. Oh well, one more episode till Spring. And in the meantime we get that Groundhog Day show? What the hell is that?

I'm now caught up and I've decided Lost is one of my favorite shows.
Although, I'm really hoping the writers have an ending in mind that they are moving towards. Because Lost would become far less enjoyable if it ever got to a point where it lost it's feeling of direction.
I hope they end Lost when it needs to end, and not just try to make random stuff up to keep it going until the network eventually pulls the plug. Just like Battlestar Galactica, Lost needs to go out with a bang, not fizzle out gradually.
You kind of knew Ecko was going to die. After Anna Lucia and Libby died, he logically followed. Although it's interesting how he died, because it gives insights into the black smoke's logic.

Interestingly, though, there is still one 'Tailie' left alive: Bernard, Rose's husband. It's odd that all of the tail-end survivors have been killed off except for him...if, by 'logically followed' you were meaning that they were killing all of the tail-end folks off.

I don't think this episode told us much at all, but it was still entertaining to watch. Nice cliffhanger, as well. My only major complaint was that Nathan Fillion was criminally underused.

I don't include Bernard because he gets the same ansillary character treatment' as Rose, except for that one episode where he got flashbacks. Whereas the other tailies all got main character treatment while they were around.
I'm trying to get my father to try to catch up on Lost in the time before the February premiere. I know he'd love it, but he seems hesitant because he saw a few season two episodes out of context and didn't understand them.

Yeah. I'd still like to see ABC take a cue from 24 and just run the whole season at once. They made a little headway this year and decided not to air reruns every other week, but the three month gap in the season is a little ridiculous.

I second this. I'm super excited they're going to show 16 weeks in a row, but having to wait blows.
