I just want to let everybody know that I will make a thread this month where everyone can post their Top 10 movies of the year. Then we can make a consensus list, and if we get enough input, I'll try to get it posted to the Metacritic Best of 2006 Main Page.
We haven't done this before because 1. we don't get a lot of year-end lists each year, and 2. many of the more critically-acclaimed films take months to get to many locations due to the way they're specially screened to open slowly and build word of mouth. For that reason, and the way most people see movies, our list shouldn't get put up until after the new year. You can say, "But I have lots of movies I can put on my list now." Feel free to list those movies here.
I'm just telling you that later on, we'll open a new thread where you can list your Top 10, in order, and we'll count them all up to determine a Forum Top 10. (I was going to assign 10 points for #1, 9 for #2, etc., down to 1 pt. for #10.) One thing though; once you post your 10, you can't go back to change it because it makes keeping the point counts too tricky. So try not to post your list until you see the films you believe may deserve to be on it. Any input or ideas would be appreciated. I'll post back later if it looks like there's an interest in doing this.

If you get enough responses, we'll be happy to post the consensus list on the main site.

There's not a weak point in this movie. From the plot, the acting, the action, the cinimatography, the scenery, etc. Everything was just right.
I agree that CASINO ROYALE is the best Bond in years -- I didn't even bother to see the last Bond I was so disgusted -- but I beg to differ re. there not being a weak point in the movie.
How about the film's interminable length? Did it really have to run 2 hours and 20 minutes? One place to cut would have been that soporific card game that went on and on and on. And while that opening set piece was well directed and it is a tradition to open the Bond films in bravura fashion, I must say it didn't really have much to do with the rest of the film.

im gonna have to say that the intro wasn't relevant to the film, but undoubtedly necesary. it showed bond getting his first two kills, initiation into 00 status.

1. Inland Empire 2. The Good Shepherd 3. Bobby 4. A Scanner Darkly 5. When The Levees Broke 6. Little Miss Sunshine 7. Volver 8. The Queen 9. A Prairie Home Companion 10. Half Nelson
I haven't been on the site in awhile, but I have been spending some time at the theater. The only movie that I think I'd love and still haven't seen is Inland Empire. Regardless, this year was full of amazing films (many of which were released far too late in the season and on far too few screens). I could have easily listed many more films under the "close calls" category. As for the biggest dissappointments, I went with the top three movies that completely let me down, opposed to the films I unfortunately saw...still knowing they would be bad.
Top Ten: 1) Pan’s Labyrinth 2) Volver 3) Letters from Iwo Jima 4) The Departed 5) United 93 6) Thank You for Smoking 7) The Queen 8) L’Enfant 9) Babel 10) The Fountain
Close Calls: - Children of Men - Brick - Little Children
Biggest Disappointments: - The Lost City - Nacho Libre - Harsh Times
Thanks for posting again, and I hope that I'm not the reason you left. My Top Four, so far, are: United 93, The Departed, Children of Men and Pan's Labyrinth. That's based on the order I saw them, not the order I rank them. I also believe there were many solid flicks, but I'm afraid the Oscars won't nominate many of the best. Oh well, what else is new?

I agree that Casino was flawed but I liked the ongoing interupted card game - very british. It was too long though and was like when you think a person has finished what they were saying and then they start up again. and again. Disappointing, since up until this uncohesive indecisive ending of the film this was a genuine classic film - now it's just one of the better films of 2006 and a really good Bond film.
