Although Cohen's character is made-up, the situations he is in are real. This is an important distinction in comparison to, say, the Christopher Guest films where mockumentary is referring to the style in which they are shot. It is a film that deserves serious consideration. While it is (literally) painfully funny, there is a very serious undercurrent that runs through it. Anyone else have any ideas?

Mel Gibson has a better chance of getting a Best Director nom than BORAT has of winning any accolades.

Hey, Mel Gibson has one it before, and Apocalypto might be beautifully directed. But I wonder why you make that statement. From your earlier post, it seems like you almost feel personally offended that Borat is receiving the reveiws it has. It's not like these reviews are coming from rogue critics, they're basically the same that gave The Departed and The Queen the excellent scores they received. I have seen both said films and agree they are terrific, but Borat is terrifc too, but it's terric in a non-traditional way. You can't necessarily talk about cinematography and character development and pacing like you do about more "traditional" films, it is great on a different level. I'm not sure if you've seen it yet, but what is it initially about Borat that rubs you the wrong way?

Borat is the funniest movie of the year hands down- Better put up my list!!!

1. United 93- The best and saddest movie of the year...
2. Borat- I had a hard time making the decision if this should overtake United 93 but it got pretty close. I nearly pissed my pants I was laughing so hard!
3. L'Enfant- The greatest foreign film of the year.
4. The Departed- This remake deserves credit for it's intense and dark flavor.
5. Fateless- Even though bringing a more sychological Holocaust movie it still proves to stick with the WWII Drama style that doesn't fail... Very sad and intimate story of a young boy from Hungary.
6. Flags of Our Fathers- Interestingly enough, I'm actually extremely excited about the new Japanese version coming out...
7. Little Miss Sunshine- Doesn't bring anything new to the table but is still fun and charming.
8. Strangers with Candy- The most random and crazy comedy I've seen a long, long time.
9. The Nightmare before Christmas- I would put this ahead but I'm not sure if it will count on my list... Definitely one of the greatest animated movies of all time!
10. An Inconvenient Truth- There are to words that sum up this movie for my list "the filler"...

"Violence, she solved everything"

I'm not offended by BORAT. I haven't even seen the film, but any film that gets a score of 90 on metacritic I'm going to see. The point I was trying to make -- using Gibson because of his current unpopularity in Hollywood -- is that the Academy does not traditionally recognize comedies at awards time. Through history, the Academy recognizes more "serious" fare at Academy Awards time. So, if BORAT does receive, let alone win, Academy Awards it would be bucking history and would be virtually unprecedented. My Gibson analogy was used to illustrate how remote BORAT's chances actually are.

Sorry I misread your tone, but you seemed a bit miffed about the score in another of your posts. Of course you're right that the academy generally avoids comedies come awards time, but there have been some exceptions in recent history. Sideways, The Full Monty, and Chocolat are a few that come to mind. We'll just have to wait and see.

You are correct that I was (and still am) skeptical that BORAT deserves a score higher than THE DEPARTED and that rivals THE QUEEN, the two movies that are my favorites so far in '06.

I am just afraid that BORAT is going to be one of those broad, silly comedies aimed at people with double-digit IQs. I hope that I am going to be pleasantly surprised when I check out the movie next week. And since BORAT was #1 at the box office this week, I assume it will still be around at my neighborhood 14-plex next week.

I also think you extending the definition of comedy to include SIDEWAYS, THE FULL MONTY and CHOCOLATE as comedies. I don't consider any of them to be comedies, though all contain comedic elements. BORAT, as far as I know, if a full blown comedy.

I may be taking some liberties, but at least in the case of Sideways and The Full Monty, if you take away the comedic elements, they're both relatively boring movies whose story has been told 1000 times. So while yes, there is a "dramatic" center, it is the humor present that gives each its particular flair and elevates the overall story. I definitely consider The Full Monty a comedy, whereas I think the line may be a bit finer with Sideways, but again, it is the comedic writing that elevates it.

I don't think Borat is AIMED at people with double digit IQ's. They get, quite fairly, skewered in the movie. I think that a lot of people with double-digit IQ's will laugh at stuff in Borat, but I think they'll miss a lot of the subtle humor. It was, flat-out, the most I've ever laughed at a movie.

Comparing Borat's Metascore with that of, say, The Departed is a little bit of apples to oranges. But I will say that Borat is the funniest road trip movie I've ever seen, and the Departed isn't even close to my favorite crime drama. It was really, really good, though.

I'm with you. I don't see nearly as many movies in the theater as I used to.

Actually, I agree that there was something missing from "The Departed." On the one hand, I thoroughly enjoyed it, found it entertaining, great performances by DiCaprio, Damon, Nicholson, Wahlberg, etc. That being said, it "felt" like it should have been even better than it was. Maybe we were all hoping for something as great as "Goodfellas," which this film clearly is not. But "The Departed" is definitely worth seeing, and one of the better films of 2006.

I thought "The Departed" was a fantastic film. Granted, it wasn't "Goodfellas", but what is? It came pretty close though. However, I do agree that there was something missing, particularly at the end of the film. That was the only part I felt unsure about..the ending.

It really looks like this is a banner year for movies. Among my favorites are Little Miss Sunshine, The Departed, Akeelah and the Bee, V for Vendetta, and Borat. One thing I have noticed in reviews of Borat is that men seem to find it much funnier than women. In this way it seems a little like the Three Stooges. Any thoughts about this?

"V for Vendetta" and "Thank you for smoking" were awesome movies, but i agree with Musicfanatic, what was so great about MI3? I mean the action was no where near as cool as the first 2, the ending in my opinion was kinda lame, and except for Phillip Seymour Hoffman, i just plain didnt see anything in it.

Im surprised nobody's mentioned "Little Miss Sunshine", i thought that one was amazing.

Look at the post above yours, start of the second line.

I haven't seen LMS yet, but I can say without hesitation that Borat's going on my list.

Hands down, without a doubt in my mind the best movie of the year by far is Casino Royale. If you don't go out and see this movie right now, you should be tortured and left for dead.

There's not a weak point in this movie. From the plot, the acting, the action, the cinimatography, the scenery, etc. Everything was just right.

Best movies of the year....

a.k.a. - if I had to pick five best picture nominees right now - this is what they would be:

1. Brick
2. Half Nelson
3. Borat
4. The Departed
5. Tristram Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story

Also, I LOVED The Science of Sleep and The Prestige.
