I saw this recently, and it was hilarious. One of the best scenes was Nick talking to his son about arguing. Nick was very funny, and lots of the other characters were funny too: William H Macy, Rob Lowe, David Koechner, Sam Elliot.

The only person I didn't like was Katie Holmes. She was the only bad part of Batman Begins, and she sucked in this as well. Besides her, this movie was very good.

"Inside Man" and "Thank You For Smoking" were both entertaining and thought-provoking. They get my tie vote for best films so far. "V For Vendetta" gets a bit of consideration as well.

I really loved brick, it reminded me of chinatown and most importantly donnie darko (great film).

V for vendetta was a good movie as well. I haven't red the book, people who have read the book hate this film as its not true to it. Balls to them.

Most other films I saw this year I was dissapointed, notible junebug, the squid and the whale. I felt uncomfotable watching them, some of the more intimate scenes in junebug between the woman and his brother and vice cera with her husband and the pregnant woman.

If you have not seen lemming, I recommend seeing it for the first hour alone, as its really funny. Its similar to david lynch in the story telling, but you can decide whether its as good as his movies or not.

I live in a smaller town, so the line between 2005/2006 is a bit blurred.

Recently, I was able to catch The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Cache, The New World, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Forty Shades of Blue -- all of which I would have considered adding to my list in 2005, if I could have caught them in the theater.

For 2006, Thank You For Smoking is probably my favorite so far, although I really loved Block Party, Inside Man, Superman, and Neil Young: Heart of Gold.

Prarie Home Companion was a disappointment to me as an Altman fan, but not near as much as V for Vandetta was, which I would consider by far the most overrated film of the year outside the obvious pick of The Da Vinci Code. X-Men and MI3 were also poor, but not to the same degree.

I can't wait to see Little Miss Sunshine, A Scanner Darkly, Volver, and Marie Antoinette -- all of which I think will be among the top films of the year.

Saw Clerks II yesterday. Very pleased with it. "PORCH MONKEY 4 LIFE" had me lolz.

I caught A Scanner Darkly in the theater and would not recommend it. The rotoscope technology used for the visuals was interesting for about 15 minutes, but ultimately served little purpose. The film consisted of over an hour of stoner dialogue and roughly 10 minutes of interesting science fiction -- the rest was sort of incoherant.

I really wish they would have made the project a short film and attached it to another Linklater film or something. Why is Pixar the only studio that seems to do this anymore? It would be great to return to this format, if for nothing more than to actually have half-a-clue about what's going on at the Oscars when they announce Best Short Film.

I've seen 71 films so far in '06 that have had a commercial release and have liked a surprising number of them.

If I had to pick one, though, I would say the best film I've seen so far has been HEART OF GOLD, Jonathan Demme's documentary of a Neil Young concert in Nashville. Just riveting. Demme did for Young what he did for the Taking Heads back in the 1980s when he directed STOP MAKING SENSE.

I didn't like united 93 as much as everyone is making out. Not best in my opinion.

I am looking forward to seeing superman returns, from my expectations it should be the best film of the year.

What was "weak" about United 93?, and what 2006 movies have you liked and why? I see from your 2005 post that you liked V For Vendetta. That one was 2006.

I'm gonna add Clerks II to my personal list along with V for Vendetta and United 93. I'll give Brick an honorable mention, only because I didn't completely understand it.

I'm perplexed with this too. Wanna maybe go into some detail, Bones_316?

I caught Wordplay over the weekend and would consider it the best documentary I've seen this year. It's crafted very similarly to Spellbound, but I think that Wordplay is superior in how it celebrates a common activity that many people can relate to instead of performing a critic. It certainly isn't hard-hitting, but it is definitely entertaining.

I also saw Miami Vice, but wouldn't consider it among the best films of the year thus far -- especially since it's only redeeming quality was it's cinematography.

In the month and a half since I last thought about this, I have some to add (the first three I already mentioned, and they remain among my favorites):

V For Vendetta
Inside Man
Thank You For Smoking
Talladega Nights
Match Point
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Clerks II

Really looking forward to Brick and Little Miss Sunshine, as well.

I saw Talladega Nights over the weekend as well, and while I found it amusing, I don't know if I'd consider it one of the best movies of the year. Just my two cents, though.

not best in an Oscar sense, but, then again, the Academy shamelessly ignores comedy. i feel that Talladega Nights was one of the best comedies i've seen this year.

In a sparse year for great movies 'United 93" stands above the others I've seen.

Boy, you got to carry that weight a long time!

I saw the Strangers With Candy movie yesterday. Holy shit. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

You've done some bad things in your life too. Like that time you set those boats on fire with the Haitians in them. Oh wait, that was me. The point is you're a racist.

That's hilarious! When is that in theaters/on video?
