The thing that bothers me about Muse getting political is that I don't like to be lectured by people who aren't all that smart and certainly not all that talented.

They still play "Ohio" on the radio.

That's OK because Neil Young is the greatest songwriting genius ever to live.

Well, that's understandable, but, I mean, that applies to just about any kind of song. That's not a comlpaint against political songs so much as it's a complaint against poor lyric writing style in general. Seriously, though, how many love songs are really original? I think there are more than a few that are cringeworthy, but there aren't many people complaining about them, at least not as much as about political songs.

This doesn't seem to be the case with you, BE, but I think lots of times the complaints against political songs stem from personal disagreement with the singer, and that those who object to being preached to are just trying to mask their petty objections with less subjective, but false ones. I mean, if you don't like political songs because you don't share the singers' sentiments, then just say so. Don't act like you have some more fundamental objection to political lyrics in general.

As I've shown before I agree with their sentiments, I just don't like the way they express those sentiments. It's funny that you mention love songs, that was the example that I was going to give, but decided against it because nobody is really offended by them. I guess that's because love songs really aren't dealing with a "serious" mattter. By that I mean that yes love is perhaps the most important matter but the way that the songs generally express the love and the hegemony of love songs in some genres means that they have become harmless for the most part. Political songs on the other hand because they seem to be saying something, need to say it in some way that expresses the artists personal feelings in a way unique to the author. Instead all we get is the same bullshit from a lot of bands jumping on the "Hey we can make more money if we bash Bush" bandwagon, and I feel that 1. It weakens the case of those who really do feel outraged( myself included) 2. Why in God's name do we need another fucking protest song?!
